new and noteworthy tv: 11/22-12/5

I finally caught up and wrapped Ted Lasso. A very good Apple+ TV show. And I am now free to cancel my subscription that I was paying for after my free trial to wrap that up. The only two shows that I let myself get hooked on were this and Mythic Quest which is also very good. I just can’t pay for another subscription. I’m debating getting a plan in place to pay for various services for a month at a time to just binge shows. I particularly am missing a few shows that moved to Paramount+, The Good Fight, Evil, and reportedly InkMaster is on its way. And since I don’t do HBO there’s a pretty good backlog there. I also still have an endless debt of tv to catch up on from the avenues I do get, normal cable (not premium), Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

And so now on to yet more shows becoming available. It is a holiday week so the strat of some holiday specials and some things will be light. I will check out It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia returning for its 15th season on Fxx and looking forward to the Zoey movie.

Hawkeye (Dis+) Series Premiere, Wednesday 11/24 – Jeremy Renner gets his small screen focus in this continued expansion of the Marvel universe.
True Stories (Net) Series Premiere, Wednesday 11/24 – A limited crime series about a comedian and his brother with Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes.
Parade and Dog Show (NBC) Thursday 11/25 – Happy Thanksgiving.
Super Crooks (Net) Series Premiere, Thursday 11/25 – Anime based on a comic book, small time crook gets his gang together for one last heist.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas (Roku) Wednesday 12/1 – This follow up film to the series is supposedly available without Roku service which I think means I can just catch it on roku.com.
The Pact (SundN) Series Premiere, Thursday 12/2 – An unexpected death puts employees into a position of hiding secrets at a brewery in this Welsh thriller.
Harlem (Am) Series Premiere, Friday 12/3 – Four girlfriends look to level up in their lives in this comedy.

returning fall favorites

A few things retired this last year and I’ve pretended that I’ve been more discriminating about adding new shows but let’s face it there’s always a pretty decent set of returning tv. Here are some of the shows I’ve still got on season pass (or the streaming equivalent). Stay tuned for intriguing new fall tv.

Big Mouth (Net, 9/29) – I caught up on this amusing coming of age animated show, that’s pretty crass but has some heartfelt humor.
Bless This Mess (ABC, 9/24) – This is one of those shows that has the potential of being very funny though they’ve just started to mine the rich comedy potential of this fish out of water with a great cast.
The Connors (ABC, 9/24) – I really liked the balance shift to the other characters after Barr left and all of their aging has just brought new fodder.
The Crown (Net, 11/4) – I admit that I’ve only gotten through the first season and though it was very good I haven’t gotten back to it, curious to see the play out of power and whatnot.
Goliath (Am, 10/4) – This show about a washed up once great lawyer got so ridiculous in the last season that I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to tune in again but now that it’s coming back I have to admit I’m a little curious.
The Good Place (NBC, 9/26) – This show has been a true delight with each season bringing the funny with each twist and turn, I can’t wait and am very sad for the final season with this forking dummies.
God Friended Me (CBS, 9/29) – This show is for sure on the schmaltzy side but sometimes even I need a little feel-good resolution and the overarching mystery is enough to keep a greater thread but not so convoluted it turns me off.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Fxx, 9/25) – Going into the fourteenth season of this the characters haven’t grown anything other than older but curious what mess of adventures they’ll get themselves into.
The Kominsky Method (Net, 10/25) – Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin are great as friends, whether they always like it or not, who are facing the challenges of their later years.
Madam Secretary (CBS, 10/6) – If only politicians were always trying to do the right thing, well I’m happy to watch the final season of Tea Leoni as Elizabeth McCord throwing her hat into the presidential race.
Mom (CBS, 9/26) – Anna Faris and Allison Janney bring mother daughter drama to new points of laughter with their fellow recovering addicts.
Mr Robot (USA, 10/6) – I have no idea what’s going on in this show anymore but still compelled to see what Rami Malek’s character and his breaks from reality bring through computer hacking.
Single Parents (ABC, 9/25) – This is another comedy that feels like it’s got a lot of great ingredients and although it hasn’t mastered them week after week I’m still for sure in.
Sorry for Your Loss (Face, 10/1) – Elizabeth Olsen as a young widow trying to deal with her grief hit so many good notes in its first season that I’m almost afraid of another but I’ll be tuning back in even if I haven’t mastered Facebook Watch.
Superstore (NBC, 9/26) – This show currently holds the mantle for best workplace comedy and since they’re not afraid to stray from big stakes issues curious how the cast will deal with Mateo being arrested by ICE.
Transparent (Am, 9/27) – I’m also pretty behind on this and haven’t tuned in post Tambor drama but it’s a rich family and some odd tangents have made for an interesting show, the final season will air as a feature length musical so there’s that.

Most of the dust has settled and very few shows were picked up by me, let’s see what I’m still looking at.

Tuesday

8pm – The Conners (ABC)
9pm – Lethal Weapon (Fox)

I do find The Conners a much fresher take than the previous Roseanne incarnation and while I’m a little less enthusiastic about the update to a new wildcard partner on Lethal Weapon, the new dude has potential but the stories and characterization seem light and knowing Wayans is bowing out after this season leaves a low enthusiasm. I’ve also dropped This is Us because the few things I thought were well done were far outweighed by my disdain for most of the characters and plotting.

Wednesday

9;30pm – Single Parents (ABC)

It’s not quite a good show but so far I like the characters enough to see if they can be something like the new Cougartown with kids.

Thursday

8pm – Big Bang Theory (CBS) / Superstore/The Good Place (NBC)
9pm – Mom (CBS) / Will & Grace (NBC)

The favorite laugers have returned and I’ll also give Murphy Brown one more shot but while I like the cast and the idea of their slant on news today it’s just not quite hitting the mark for me. I still need to catch Legacies on CW but having passed on previous incarnations am assuming that will also get a pass but who knows it could be a gem of a young supernaturals option.

Friday

8pm – Last Man Standing/Cool Kids (Fox) / Speechless (ABC)

No promises on keeping Kids but as a pairing with the predictable but mildly entertaining Last Man, it’ll get another viewing. And I still find Speechless fresh but I’m dropping Fresh Off the Boat which is hitting the repetitive character archetype point Modern Family did for me after a few seasons. I also couldn’t get on board with Midnight, Texas for a second season but it was a fun summer show last year.

Sunday

8pm – God Friended Me (CBS)
10pm – Madam Secretary (CBS)

And here’s to my night of hope, while God is a little too schmaltzy it scratches the Kevin Probably Saves the World itch, and Tea Leoni gives me hope that politics can be challenging but people are trying to do the right thing.

And a we’ve got some continued fun in cable with: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (TBS), Ink Master (Spike), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Fxx), You (Life), Z Nation (Syfy)

It’s hard to keep track of it all but here’s a look at some of the things that I’m looking at in returning fall tv, don’t worry there’s still midseason (and various other starts) for things not on the list. Stay tuned for intriguing new fall tv.

The Big Bang Theory (CBW, 9/24) – This show amuses consistently enough and looking forward to seeing what this final season will bring to our gang.
Bojack Horseman (Net, 9/14) – Consistently one of the best shows, this weird take on a washed up, depressed, alcoholic horseman always bring it, can’t wait.
Fresh Off the Boat (ABC, 10/5) – The Huangs bring their own family quirks at this look at their life in Orlando in the 90s.
The Good Place (NBC, 9/27) – This show has managed to stay so fresh I’m super curious as to how our dumb dumbs will manage this season.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Fxx, 9/5) – When a bunch of awful people never change and just keep being awful, it is surprisingly still fresh and funny.
Last Man Standing (Fox, 9/28) – I tuned out of this show when it was on, finding the right and left wing politicy jokes a little too ham handed but in repeats I got to sort of like the characters, though dubious about the replacement of yet another daughter.
Lethal Weapon (Fox, 9/25) – Speaking of replacements, after the real life Riggs and Murtaugh couldn’t get along Clayne Crawford’s antics got him unrenewed, so curious how this will work with Seann William Scott stepping in as the new maverick.
Madam Secretary (CBS, 10/7) – This started out as sort of a poor man’s Good Wife, but in a painful political spectrum its nice to see people dealing with fake real issues and knowing that although it’s not all good with help from our spunky Secretary it always mostly turns out ok.
Midnight, Texas (NBC, 10/26) – I think this show only lasted on my queue because it premiered during some downtime but this not revolutionary take on a small town of sort of extraordinary (vampires, witches, etc.) outsiders deal with random things, and of course saving the world.
Mom (CBS, 9/27) – I still love the play between Allison Janney and Anna Faris and their sober (mostly) friends, and I don’t turn away from a rerun.
Murphy Brown (CBS, 9/27) – It’s a stretch to call this a return but, I’m intrigued to see the update to Murphy and her news colleagues in today’s world.
Ozark (Net, 8/31) – This was one of my fave bingy shows last year, I was compelled to keep up with Jason Bateman as money launderer getting he and his family into, and sometimes out of, new fixes as he tries to make it work in this resort town.
Speechless (ABC, 10/5) – This whole family has so much personality that it’s almost not about the fact that one son is in a wheelchair unable to speak.
Superstore (NBC, 10/4) – More quirky misfits with this group of employees working the store and of course getting into each other’s lives.
This is Us (NBC, 9/25) – I have to say I almost didn’t list this, I’m pretty over this schmaltzy show other than a few story lines but will likely tune into the premiere to see where they’re taking it but I sense a breakup ahead.
Will & Grace (10/4) – One of the latest reboots, I enjoy visiting with these folks again, mostly when they steer into the reality of the fact that it’s more than ten years later.
Z Nation (Syfy, 10/5) – This show was the antidote to The Walking Dead treating the zombie apocalypse with a lightness that kept me tuning into this far after abandoning the other.

US Open Tennis (ESPN) – Play continues this week leading up to finals over the weekend, go Federer.
A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities (Net) Series Premiere, Monday – No word on these series comparing Taipei and Taiwanese-American community.
Model Squad (E!) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 8pm – If ANTM isn’t enough for you this gives a glimpse inside real models lives.
The Bobby Brown Story (BET) Miniseries Premiere, Tuesday, 9pm – For those of you who just can’t get enough.
Mayans MC (Fx) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – Fans of Sons of Anarchy (which I was), which had an admittedly uneven run, will tune in to this look at another motorcycle club this time in So Cal, though from the early episodes previewed by critics sounds like it’s missing some of the better aspects of the former.
The Purge (Syfy/USA) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – I’ve never seen any of these movies but can only assume it will have the same spirit, which for me doesn’t seem like a good one.
54 Hours (SunN) Series Premiere, Thursday – A four part hostage drama based on a German bank robbery gone awry.
Save Me (Starz) Series Premiere, Thursday – No advance word on this suspect of a kidnapping searches for the real napper.
Rel (Fox) Series Premiere, Sunday, 8pm – I never have high expectations for these made a comedy based on my real life, this one about a man restarting his life post divorce, but often worth a look.
The Miniaturist (PBS) Series Premiere, Sunday, 9pm – I’m not usually a huge watcher of PBS series but you never know, this one set in 1686 Amsterdam where a bride’s gift of a miniature replica of their home conveys secrets.
Kidding (Show) Series Premiere, Sunday, 10pm – Jim Carrey in a show about a kids tv personality whose life starts to go awry definitely worth a look but early reviews are mixed.
You (Life) Series Premiere, Sunday, 10pm – Based on a novel, this “psychological thriller” follows Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley get his stalker on, maybe entertaining but likely not great.

Plus some returning streaming shows: I Love You, America (Hulu, Thursday), Atypical (Net, Friday), Las Chicas del Cable (Net, Friday), Marvel’s Iron Fist (Net, Friday).

Another year and TV is starting again. A few new ones that I’m not sure are worth more than a glance, Zoe is the latest sitcom for Brandy, MTV’s Chronicles based on some fantasy book, Poor Decisions may be just that, and Jane Lynch returns in Angel, while you can’t count out J Lo and Liotta returning to the small screen on the latest cop drama. For returning shows I’m a fan of New Girl and It’s Always Sunny and will resist the final season of Idol.

Pass on Eye Candy a dabble into serial killing via dating app, ready to check out Man Seeking following Sunny and the tv version of 12 Monkeys, but may pass on Granchester which isn’t getting quite the buzz of other British mysteries. I also have M&J and Muskateers on my guilty list but not sure I recommend either other for anything but fluff, which isn’t bad. And of course the final season of Parks.

Well we’re easing into it but I think we can officially categorize post Labor Day September as fall. And while I’m still waiting for a little more info on new shows to see what I’m most excited about there are some returning favorites already queued up with a season pass.

The League (Fxx, 10/3) – This is one of those off color Fx (now Fxx) series that has sort of grown on me, people who are so wrong it’s right, no football appreciation required (if you like It’s Always Sunny this is a nice pairing).
Sons of Anarchy (Fx, 9/9) – This show has had some uneven spots but watching the interpersonal drama, and admittedly the significant violence, and who’s lying, Jax, makes it a can’t miss to see where our favorite motorcycle gang ends up.
New Girl/The Mindy Project (Fox, 9/16) – Both of these shows have improved with time and with fleshing out the ensemble, they make me laugh enough.
The Good Wife (CBS, 9/21) – Last season this show really demonstrated how to shake up a longer term series, and still hold on to what makes it special; still has the best balance of weekly cases with the personal and political drama where I’m interested in what everyone is doing.
Sleepy Hollow (Fox, 9/22) – One of the critics I read dubbed this show ‘bonkers awesome’ and she’s right, it’s a ridiculous premise but the fast pace and main character dynamics keep it oh so interesting and did I mention headless horseman ridiculous?
The Blacklist (NBC, 9/22) – This one is really all about James Spader and fortunately that’s enough to keep this criminal with unclear motives catching bad guys on his list interesting.
The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 9/22) – They’ve done a pretty good job keeping what could be a one note show going, adding to the ensemble and growing the characters a bit, but keeping the mockery in top form.
Parenthood (NBC, 9/25) – As we enter the final season we can assume that the Braverman family will not be drama free and while I haven’t loved every story arc I’ve come to be invested, plus I would follow Lauren Graham and Peter Krause anywhere.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox, 9/28) – The latest addition to funny, again finding the balance of the could be annoying main character Samberg has been key but it’s really the ensemble with the amazing Andre Braugher among others that makes it.
The Walking Dead (AMC, 10/12) – Each season has had a different feel based on where the cast is but I’m intrigued to see them back together and of course getting out of whatever fix they’re in since the live people are often more of a problem than the dead ones.
The 100 (CW, 10/22) – I keep giving these relatively cheesy CW shows a shot and this one, which is basically pretty people land on earth and so far run into pretty people who survived, but I’m often a sucker for that whole moralistic creating your own society and what’s really right, we’ll see if this season keeps me coming back.
Grimm (NBC, 10/24) – A procedural show of the not normal variety, in that there is a world of non humans among us, and while I wouldn’t say I love this show the characters and stories keep me coming back.
Elementary (CBS, 10/30) – I can’t watch this show at the same time as Sherlock because they’re so different in tone but I am down for seeing what our re-imagined Holmes and Watson get up to each week mostly because I like Miller and Liu.

Notable mention (those that are either a little uneven, a little passed their prime, or too fresh to see if I’m hooked): Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD (ABC, 9/23), The Middle (ABC, 9/24), Bones (Fox, 9/25), Mom (CBS, 9/29)

And keep your love for a few of these shows on the back-burner until mid-season and beyond: The Americans, Cougar Town, Hannibal, Hart of Dixie, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Justified, Lost Girl, Louie, The Mentalist, Orphan Black, Parks and Recreation

Just in case someone you know recently received or signed up for Netflix streaming, the procrastinator thought it might be time to do a recommendation round up to help with your distractions. For latest movies and all series you still might need to go to the full dvd subscription but I find enough to keep my backlog filled during my regular series downtime. I definitely lean toward the television (at least until I get a couple more series under my belt) but there are a few new and old movie options that are worth a peek as well.

TELEVISION

House of Cards/Orange is the New Black/Arrested Development – Netflix original series might be what drove you to pull the trigger and they’re worth a watch (plus the backlog of earlier AD still hold up).
Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog – Sometimes I just like to revisit the Joss Whedon backlog.
Battlestar Galactica/Friday Night Lights/Chuck/Terriers/The Riches/Saving Grace/Freaks and Geeks – These more dramatic series, some cut far too short and some a little long, are good slightly irregular watching.
Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23/My Boys – Some comedic fare for just a little something quick.
Sherlock/Luther/Parenthood/Sons of Anarchy – A mix of dramatic series that are still going and definitely worth a look if you have yet to get on board.
Louie/Wilfred/The League/It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia/Parks and Recreation – And a little comedy catch up for those also still running.

Some new stuff is a’coming but before we get caught up in the new shiny things here are some of the tried and true that I’m most looking forward to:

The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 9/26) – This show is still good for a chuckle and the upping of the gal pals doesn’t hurt.
Elementary (CBS, 9/26) – Sherlock and Watson in a new modern day slant, I dig them and it.
The Good Wife (CBS, 9/29) – Still one of my fave dramas, balancing good characters and story.
Grimm (NBC, 10/25) – Ghoul of the week in a fairy tale kind of way kept me coming back.
Hart of Dixie (CW) – Our big city doctor may not be all that revolutionary but sometimes you need a cute small town show.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia/The League (FXX) – So wrong they’re right.
Luther (BBCA) – Ok this is basically already done but I love some Luther.
The Mentalist (CBS, 9/29) – Slightly odd no longer fake psychic still keeps me intrigued.
The Middle (ABC, 9/25) – Good ole middle American family comedy, under the radar but worth a look and a laugh.
The Mindy Project/New Girl (Fox, 9/17) – These ladies and their supporting casts both got a good stride last year.
Parenthood (NBC, 9/26) – The Braverman’s are always getting into some trouble or another, but I just want them all to be happy.
Parks & Recreation (NBC, 9/26) – When they’re on, this might be my favorite comedy on tv.
Sons of Anarchy (Fx, 9/10) – Damn those MC guys can’t just chillax, lots of drama and conflict and lack of impulse control, all in the name of trying to make something or other right.
The Walking Dead (AMC, 10/13) – Zombie fun and what’s the right choice in the new world order?

Honorable Mention (aka still on the TiVo): Bones (Fox), Castle (ABC, 9/23) How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 9/23), Modern Family (ABC, 9/25).
