midseason fun

TV never stops, but a midseason thing still happens on networks. So take a look at what’s coming.

  • Going Dutch (Fox, 1/2) – Denis Leary steps into this comedy as an Army Colonel punished by being sent to a Netherlands base which isn’t so much focused on military purposes.
  • Doc (Fox, 1/7) – Molly Parker plays a doctor who can’t remember the last eight years of her life and a lot has changed.
  • Hollywood Squares (CBS, 1/9) – It’s baaaack… I don’t normally note gameshows but I remember this show fondly and I guess Drew Barrymore steps into the center square, I’ll sample.
  • Watson (CBS, 1/26) – Morris Chestnut takes on the role in this latest incarnation, centered on solving medical cases.
  • The Hunting Party (NBC, 2/3) – A new procedural with a small team tracking down ‘the most dangerous killers ever seen.’
  • Suits LA (NBC, 2/23) – Suits had a big resurgence on streaming so they’re giving it a go LA style, Harvey will show up but not sure for how long and with who else.
  • Sherlock & Daughter (CW, tbd) – Sherlock is joined by his American daughter after her mother’s murder.

A few returning shows I have in my queue: Animal Control (Fox, 1/2), Will Trent (ABC, 1/7), Wild Cards (CW, 2/5), The Conners (ABC, March).

I also don’t normally list non-network in this list but here are the returning cable/streaming shows I have my eye out for: Harley Quinn (Max, 1/16), Severance (App+, 1/17), Night Agent (Net, 1/23), Mythic Quest (App+, 1/29), Yellowjackets (P+, 2/14), White Lotus (HBO, 2/16), Reacher (Prime, 2/20), Dark Winds (AMC, 3/9), Bosch: Legacy (Prime, March), The Last of Us (HBO, Spring), Stranger Things (Net, TBD), You (Net, TBD), Big Mouth (Net, TBD), Ginny & Georgia (Net, TBD) One Piece (Net, TBD), Poker Face (Pea, TBD), The Bear (Fx, TBD), Project Runway (Free, TBD), Euphoria (HBO, TBD).

Stay tuned for the New and Noteworthy posts for updates and as always things change so check your local listings.

Night Court

While I think we’ve all become accustomed to less official tv seasons, the networks do still have a slate of offerings that roll out in the new year. Here are a few things to keep your eye out for. Along with a few returning shows including a couple I watch, 911: Lone Star (Fox, 1/17) which is super random but somehow I got hooked, and American Auto (NBC, 1/24) which had some potential last year but hadn’t quite found its footing yet.

  • Will Trent (ABC) Tuesday 1/3, 10pm – Based on Karin Slaughter’s book series we follow a Georgia Special Agent who brings his own upbringing baggage for good and for bad, I caught the first one of these and thought the cast had promise.
  • Alert (Fox) Sunday 1/8, 8pm – This focuses on a missing person’s unit with a woman whose son is missing and early buzz is not good but we’ll see.
  • Night Court (NBC) Tuesday 1/17, 8pm – If you remember the old Night Court, it’s back, and John Larroquette reprises his role alongside Melissa Rauch who will play judge Harry Stone’s daughter.
  • Accused (Fox) Sunday 1/22, 9pm – A look at defendants in criminal trials as an anthology series, based on the British series.
  • Not Dead Yet (ABC) Wednesday 2/8, 8:30/9:30 – Gina Rodriguez plays an obituary writer trying to restart her life and I think talking to the dead.
  • Animal Control (Fox) Thursday 2/16, 9pm – Joel McHale heads up a cast focusing on the people, and animals, that animal control has to deal with.
  • Found (NBC) Sunday 2/19, 10pm – I guess this is like Alert in its focus on missing persons, this one features a person who was once missing. (Update: This is apparently being held until fall)
  • The Company You Keep (ABC) Sunday 2/19, 10pm – Can a con man and undercover office find love?
  • True Lies (CBS) Thursday 2/23, 9pm – A series adaptation of the film where a suburban wife finds out her hubs is a spy and she gets in on the game.

There are also some new reality/gameshow options: The Parent Test (ABC, 12/15), America’s Got Talent: All Stars (NBC, 1/2), Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test (Fox, 1/4), Lingo (CBS, 1/11).

Naomi

The seasons are a little less significant now that we’re seeing shows year-round. But the networks still have a nice midseason outing that is worth pondering. NBC will have the Olympics going (omg already!) so their schedule is a little off but otherwise NBC, CBS, ABC, CW, and Fox have some new items on the horizon.

  • Abbott Elementary (ABC, 12/7) – A comedy of dedicated teachers thrown together in Philadelphia public school.
  • All American: Homecoming (CW, 2/21) – A spinoff from the All American series, so you know.
  • American Auto (NBC, 1/4) – A workplace comedy about making an auto company in Detroit work.

  • The Cleaning Lady (Fox, 1/3) – Based on an Argentinian series this crime drama where a Cambodian doctor ends up working for organized crime.
  • The Endgame (NBC, 2/21) – Bank heist drama with Morena Baccarin, sure I’ll check it out.
  • Good Sam (CBS, 1/5) – Sophia Bush stars as a new surgeon and complications ensue.
  • Grand Crew (NBC, 1/4) – A comedy with a group of yound professionals meeting up for wine and life.
  • Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer (Fox, 1/6) – A rich guy and a, not rich guy, meet twenty women in this latest spin on reality dating.
  • Law & Order (NBC, 2/24) – A reboot of the original in the franchise, picking up where things left off?
  • Monarch (Fox, 1/30) – A multigenerationsal musical drama about a country music family.
  • Naomi (CW, 1/11) – A superhero drama from Ava DuVernay based on the comic.
  • Next Level Chef (Fox, 1/2) – Gordon Ramsay is back with another cooking competition looking for a new superstar.

As always check your local listings.

As the shows keep rolling in here’s what has come in and will be coming. So far I’m mostly glad there’s not much to add to my queue.

  • 1600 Penn (NBC) – I almost like this crazy family in the White House, and although some funny notes, not quite enough.
  • The Americans (Fx) – So far so good for this 80’s Russian Spy drama, though admittedly I’ve only watched the first and curious where it will go.
  • Banshee (Cin) – Alas no Cinemax for me but probably campy, sexy fun.
  • Bates Motel* (A&E) – Prequel to Psycho, could go either way.
  • The Carrie Diaries (CW) – Carrie lite in the 80s, as long as you think of it as a CW show and not a Sex prequel you might be happy, I can’t decide if I am.
  • Continuum (Syfy) – Very Terminator time travelesque as rebels and a cop end up farther back in time than intended to in order to change the future, too syfy for me.
  • Cult* (CW) – TV cults and crimes in a CW drama could be the terribly bad but possible good bad.
  • Deception (ABC) – An alt take on the Revenge-ish feel with undercover cop and a very drama filled family is a little too dopey for me.
  • Defiance* (Syfy) – Aliens settling on earth, hmm?
  • Do No Harm (NBC) – Split personality doc cancelled after two episodes, I deleted without a watch.
  • The Family Tools* (ABC) – Getting into the family handyman business.
  • The Following (Fox) – The creepy drama about a killer psycho and his ‘cult’ of followers and the personal relationship to ex-FBI Kevin Bacon, I am so about to stop watching.
  • Golden Boy* (CBS) – New cop, old cop.
  • House of Cards (Netflix) – Kevin Spacey leads this Netflix only release, I really need to check it out.
  • How To Live Without Your Parents* (ABC) – Sarah Chalke returns to tv as a single mom returning to her parents’.
  • Legit (Fx) – An offbeat comedy about a terrible guy trying to be a not terrible guy, it’s a little too Larry David-ish for me.
  • Monday Mornings (TNT) – I feel like this premiered and I missed it.
  • Newsreaders (AdSw) – A spin-off of Children’s Hospital, for whatever that means to you.
  • Out There* (IFC) – Animated monsteresque kids in action.
  • Red Widow* (ABC) – Russian mafia for a newly single mom.
  • Ripper Street (BBCA) – Set following the murders of Jack the Ripper the cops try to deal with the latest crimes, I tried the first of this but just wasn’t that into it.
  • Vikings* (Hist) – The first scripted series from the historians, and it’s about vikings.
  • Washington Heights (MTV) – Twenty-somethings, blah blah.
  • Zero Hour (ABC) – Chasing conspiracies keep our protagonists busy.

* Still to come, stay tuned to ‘next week’s for premiere dates.
