new and noteworthy tv: 1/23-1/29

It’s funny how when I get busy my TiVo backlog starts to creep up, plus I’m finally allowing myself a little Australian Open.

  • Outsiders (WGN) Season Premiere, Tuesday, 9pm – This might not be an amazing TV show but I got wrapped up in the SAMCRO-esque group of bad(?) folks outside the norm and like Sons can’t imagine how they’ll keep the story going.
  • The Path (Hulu) Season Premiere, Wednesday – I’m not onboard with Hulu so don’t have a personal opinion but think this has gotten relatively mixed reviews.
  • Riverdale (CW) Series Premiere, Thursday, 9pm – Not your father’s Archie Comic I’ve actually heard some good things about this reboot with a more murder mystery teen soap approach.
  • Z: The Beginning of Everything (Am) Series Premiere, Friday – Christina Ricci takes the role of Zelda Fitzgerald in what I hear isn’t a convincing or engaging run.
  • Australian Open (ESPN) Saturday/Sunday, 12am – The women’s and the men’s finals, the possibilities…
  • SAG Awards (TBS/TNT) Sunday, 5pm – The award season continues.
  • Miss Universe (Fox) Sunday, 7pm – Steve Harvey returns as host.

new and noteworthy tv: 12/5-12/11

I am finally making a dent on my backlog but have dropped Pitch and Timeless in the process, while Queen Sugar and Undercover are sitting backed up their fate to be determined, just too many other things I’d rather be watching and even I have limited TV watching time after all.

  • Showtime at the Apollo (Fox) Monday, 8pm – Music and comedy stars perform.
  • Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (CBS) Monday, 10pm – How is this still a thing?
  • Shut Eye (Hulu) Series Premiere, Wednesday – Fake psychic becoming psychic sounds played but with Burn Notice‘s Jeffrey Donovan it might be worth a look.
  • Taraji’s White Hot Holidays (Fox) Thursday, 8pm – Celebrate.
  • Toy Story that Time Forgot/Shrek the Halls (ABC) Thursday, 8pm – Ho ho ho!
  • Captive (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – This docuseries looks into the captives and captors of false imprisonments.
  • Fuller House (Net) Season Premiere, Friday – They’re back.
  • Mozart in the Jungle (Am) Season Premiere, Friday – I’ve heard some good things about this series.
  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns (CBS) Saturday, 8/9/9:30pm – And a little more good cheer.
  • Critic’s Choice Award (A&E) Sunday, 8pm – What the season is really about.
  • Frozen/The Making of Frozen (ABC) Sunday, 10pm – I think this movie was a thing.

new and noteworthy tv: 5/16-5/22

I wrapped the mildly entertaining and easy to view Grace & Frankie on Netflix, I do enjoy having a half hour comedy to fill into my schedule. And looking forward to a few things wrapping up to give me some summer downtime.

  • Coupled (Fox) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 8pm – Another island dating show.
  • Blue Collar Backers (Disc) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – For my Shark Tank friends here’s some folks looking for help with their businesses.
  • Lady Dynamite (Net) Series Premiere, Friday, 3am – A half hour comedy by and based on actress/comedian Maria Bamford seems totally random which could be a good thing.
  • Food Network Star (Food) Season Premiere, Sunday, 9pm – Bobby Flay and Giada take another pass at hopefuls.
  • French Open (NBC) Sunday 10am – The first rounds begin, though other than potential future dates, looks like the move to Tennis channel may thwart me.
  • Billboard Music Awards (ABC) Sunday, 8pm – Ludacris and Ciara host.
  • Preacher (AMC) Series Premiere, Sunday 10pm – Another based on a comic, this supernatural following of a West Texas preacher inhabited by something… another offering that’s worth a look.

new and noteworthy tv: 3/28-4/3

I’m still in denial about shows on ‘networks’ like Hulu though this one could be worth a look. Otherwise a few more options that could kill some time but probably won’t.

  • The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke (CBS) Tuesday, 10pm – James Corden celebrates a year of his show.
  • The Path (Hulu) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 3am – Bringing Aaron Paul back to television for a dramatic look at cult life.
  • Lopez (TVL) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – George Lopez returns to comedy playing what looks like a version of himself.
  • Rush Hour (CBS) Series Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – Remember this movie with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker… well it’s being made into a tv show with some other guys.
  • The Ranch (Net) Series Premiere, Friday, 3am – Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson are together again in this latest comedy where Kutcher apparently returns home to the family ranch.
  • Wynonna Earp (Syfy) Series Premiere, Friday, 10pm – Wyatt Earp’s great granddaughter fights the supernatural based on the comic.
  • Academy of Country Music Awards (CBS) Sunday, 8pm – Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley host, and if those names mean something to you, you might enjoy this.
  • Miami Open (ESPN2) Wed-Sun, 10am – Hard court season continues.

This week caught up on a bit of backlog plus diving back into my Netflix rotation, kicking off new series Love which is growing on me.

  • Prey (BBCA) Series Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – It’s apparently two three-part stories with yet another flawed detective leading the charge.
  • Fuller House (Net) Series Premiere, Friday, 3am – I was apparently not the right age to have watched Full House and this revisit has apparently a lot of nostalgia but not much to speak of if you’re not revisiting old friends (minus the Olsens of course).
  • Independent Spirit Awards (IFC) Saturday, 5pm – As a nice warm up awards show.
  • The Oscars (ABC) Sunday, 5:30pm – The most important award is who wins the pool.
  • Rough Draft (Ova) Sunday, 8:30pm – Talk show hosted by Reza Aslan puts its focus on writers a la Actors Studio.
