In the Dark

Last week thought the starts of What We Do In The Shadows, Abby’s, and Tacoma FD were all a little uneven but enough promise to give them each another shot. Sorry to see You’re the Worst wrap up its run on Wednesday, it’s always been a little uneven but the great moments are great and they’re doing a nice job of wrapping things up. Excited for the return of Killing Eve on Sunday, and on streaming The Tick and even though I am always less than enthusiastic about Sabrina I find myself looking forward to its return.

  • The Twilight Zone (CBSAA) Series Premiere, Monday – Jordan Peele steps into the narrating position of a show that someone thinks we need more of, likely good if you’re looking for more of this sort of thing.
  • Unspeakable (Sund) Series Premiere, Friday, 12am – This eight part miniseries follows the Canadian HIV tainted blood scandal.
  • In the Dark (CW) Series Premiere, Thursday, 9pm – Boozy and blind 20 something finds a dead body, or does she? This can’t be good…
  • Persona (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – An anthology of four films starring the same actress in different tales.
  • Quicksand (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – Based on a Nordic crime novel a mass school shooting finds a student on trial for murder
  • Warrior (Cin) Series Premiere, Friday, 10pm – Gritty action-packed crime drama set during the 19th century Tong Wars of SF’s China town.

Returning streaming: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Net, Friday), Roman Emipre (Net, Friday). Spirit (Net, Friday), The Tick (Am, Friday)

I tried The Fix which was a little too generic of an OJ trial spinoff, and The Village which tried to set up every predictable layer of drama, and The Perfectionists which as a non PLL fan I guess makes sense that I wasn’t quite sucked in. I did enjoy streaming picks Shrill and Sex Education and a little less digging on The Umbrella Academy.

  • What We Do in the Shadows (Fx) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – A spinoff from the movie takes a look at three vampire roommates, def give this a shot based off of the weird flick.
  • Abby’s (NBC) Series Premiere, Thursday, 9:30 – Sometimes you bet on a show just because of good cast and Natalie Morales and Neil Flynn will do it as they hang out in the backyard bar.
  • Tacoma FD (Tru) Series Premiere, Thursday, 10:30 – A comical look as a fire chief tries to get serious.
  • Hanna (Am) Series Premiere, Friday – Based on the film of the same name young trained assassin heads far and wide running or chasing, not sure.
  • Osmosis (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – Futuristic dating predictions.
  • Traitors (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – A spy thriller.
  • Mrs. Wilson (PBS) Series Premiere, Sunday, 9pm – Based on the memoir of her grandmother Ruth steps into her role as they uncover the grandfather’s polygamy in this miniseries.

Returning streaming: On My Block (Net, Friday), Santa Clarita Diet (Net, Friday).

Chipping away at a few shows and not really introducing any new shows until I do. Though did start a bit of a binge of the latest season of Queer Eye which I find to be a little too high on the schmaltz and a little light on the makeover details but it’s entertaining enough.

  • The Fix (ABC) Series Premiere, Monday, 10pm – This latest legal drama from Marcia Clark has likable Robin Tunney in the lead but doesn’t look more than middling.
  • The Village (NBC) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – The latest heartfelt offering of a bunch of people in a Brooklyn apartment that reportedly might not rise to This Is Us quality, and that’s a show I’m already over.
  • The Act (Hulu) Series Premiere, Wednesday – This new dramatic take on true crime dramas might have some merit with cast including Patricia Arquette and Chloe Sevigny.
  • Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists (Free) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 8pm – Some of the gals go off to college, and yep there’s a murder, likely for fans of the original.
  • The Critters: A New Binge (Shudder) Series Premiere, Thursday – Apparently Shudder is maybe something else to look into if you’re in to horror, this is another take on the movies.
  • And a few new Netflix foreign offerings on Friday: Carlo & Malik, Coisa Mais Linda (Most Beautiful Thing), Delhi Crime, Historia De Un Crimen (History of Crime )

Returning streaming: The OA (Net, Friday)

I finally finished Homecoming and the fact that I didn’t speed through a half hour show is usually not a great sign. I also wrapped up Big Mouth which had some cute elements in the comical animated look at middle school.

  • Project Runway (Bravo) Season Premiere, Thursday, 8pm – You may have this on your season pass but check your listing because it’s moving back to Bravo and with a new host Karlie Kloss and mentor Christian Siriano.
  • Love, Death & Robots (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – A new animated anthology with a sci fi slant.
  • Shrill (Hulu) Series Premiere, Friday – Based on the memoir Aidy Bryant plays the protagonist deals with life.
  • Turn Up Charlie (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – Idris Elba plays DJ/nanny, love him but dubious.

Returning streaming: The Good Fight (CBSAA, Thursday), Arrested Development (Net, Friday), Catastrophe (Am, Friday), Queer Eye (Net, Friday).

procrastinator’s picks – top tv of 2018

Well tv is getting much harder to keep up with and the introduction of more and more streaming shows I feel like I can let those back up a bit. I paused to pretend I could catch up at the beginning of the year but while I tried a few things realized I just needed to draw the line and move on. I did add Hulu this year so I’m starting on original fare there but still not paying for premium cable so missing shows like those on HBO. And for a look at what critics were picking try Metacritic.

  • The Americans (Fx)- This season wrapped up what was an amazing run, you really go through ups and downs with the spy family and the series finale gave it the sendoff it deserved.
  • Killing Eve (BBCA) – Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in this cat and mouse show just pull you in and while she’s doing terrible things as a killer Comer as Villanelle draws you in, oh and the fashion!
  • Bojack Horseman (Net) – The layering of tragic and the fun they have with the world they’ve created still make this show a top choice.
  • Atlanta (Fx) – Glover tries to manage his rapper cousin manages to make each episode unique and interesting while still creating a powerful overall season arc and the entire cast gets moments to shine.
  • The Good Place (NBC) – This show gets credit for creating a unique story and world but also for daring to leap forward with the concept with enough frequency to risk a fail but keeps it fresh, I can’t wait to see what awaits those dummies next season.
  • Casual (Hulu) – This was one of the first series I tore through after finally getting Hulu and the final season, while taking some odd turns surprisingly tied all our journeys together.
  • Sorry For Your Loss (FB Watch) – I sort of started this show in the hopes I would never have to track anything down on Facebook Watch again but was swept up in the story of Elizabeth Olsen as a young widow and those around her.
  • Rectify (AMC) – Ok this show technically ended in 2016 but I caught the rest of the run that I had missed this last year and was mesmerized by the tragedy of the post prison life of our protagonist as well as the damage to those around him and their attempts to move on.

I know the goal is always a top ten list but that’s where my super strong recommendations felt like they wanted to stop. Though I will toss out some other gems worth a watch pending your type of fare: The Bold Type (Free), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC), Dear White People (Net), Forever (Net), Kominsky Method (Net), Lodge 49 (AMC), Mom (CBS), One Day at a Time (Net), Queen Sugar (OWN), Santa Clarita Diet (Net), Speechless (ABC), Superstore (NBC), You (Life), Younger (TVL), You’re the Worst (Fxx).

I’m sure I’m forgetting something. What were your favorites?

Giving a little sample to some more of the new series Whiskey Cavalier was exactly a fluffy as expected and could be good filler I’ll check out one more of that as well as another of Flack to see how the future messes are managed. Will pass on another episode of shows that I couldn’t get into with protagonists that just weren’t compelling The Enemy Within and Gone. Also continuing some of my existing streaming before adding anything new.

  • The Order (Net) Series Premiere, Thursday – College freshman joins a secret society and things like magic and werewolves are involved.
  • After Life (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – Ricky Gervais turns back to series playing a character that decides to do and say what he wants after his wife dies worth a look.
  • Made in Heaven (Am) Series Premiere, Friday – A dramatic look at two Indian wedding planners.
  • Now Apocalypse (Starz) Series Premiere, Sunday, 9pm – A new coming of age comedy series.

Returning streaming: Secret City (Net, Wednesday), Tin Star (Am, Friday)

Wrapped up Casual which I really enjoyed and Maniac which was interesting but not all that for me. Started tackling the intriguing Russian Doll and the less intriguing Umbrella Academy. Also excited for the return of Better Things.

  • The Enemy Within (NBC) Series Premiere, Monday, 10pm – I don’t know if I can stand Dexters Jennifer Carpenter in another role but check her out as a former CIA operative-turned traitor now helping.
  • Gone (WGN) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 9pm – Former kidnap victim helps kidnapees.
  • Whiskey Cavalier (ABC) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – Scott Foley and Lauren Cohen star in what looks like an 80s will they or won’t they crime fighters.
  • Alien News Desk (Syfy) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 11pm – Some sort of animated news spoof.
  • Northern Rescue (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – Man moves his family to his rural hometown after his wife’s death.
  • The Widow (Am) Series Premiere, Friday – Kate Beckinsale stars as a woman whose husband was killed in a plane crash, or was he?
