boise bound

Creek Ducks

Have covid shots will travel! Travel post-pandemic was such a crazy idea, but I was definitely missing getting away, or just not being in my apartment. It was a surreal couple of days after being two weeks clear of my vaccine and then hopping on a plane hanging with a friend and being out and about doing things. Why Boise? Well mainly because I have a friend who has been there for most of the pandemic, but also I’d never been. So Boise is very outdoorsy and I, between my foot issues and my desire to be in shade at all times, am not so much. So my friend catered our activities to things that were a little more my speed.

Priorities of course included food and drink. Breakfasts including a couple of outings, The Griddle provided some standard fare, I appreciate a make your own omelet. I’m also on a limited sourdough bread only (yeast, sheesh) and able to get a sourdough breakfast sandwich at Certified. This was in a cute neighborhood so we did a little stroll around. Good happy hour at Tavern at Bown Crossing followed by dinner. And “wine Wednesday” at The Refuge followed by sourdough of the pizza variety at Flying Pie Pizzeria. And I have to say it’s been so long since I had pizza I was just happy to be on a carb frenzy I’ll forgive their one can option of wine…. Also while doing a stroll around downtown (which felt like mostly bars and restaurants) we had a tasty lunch at Fork with a nice outside patio. Another foodie day did also include a trip to the local farmer’s market, which I recall was followed by a trip to Costco to get full balance.

For a bit about where I was there’s the Idaho State Museum, which is small but brought back the fun of a grade school field trip. We made a quick pop into the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, quick mostly because it was closing but our 15-20 minutes covered what they had of the Basque experience. A stop at one of the Basque restaurants nearby would make a nice pairing. And then one day we did those electric scooters (and survived), along the very pretty green belt that runs along the river. That trip included the collection at the Boise Art Museum which was also nicely done. Followed up by a trip to Telaya Wine Co for some yummy wine tasting on a pretty afternoon.

The weather this time of year is generally a little warmer than in San Francisco, but I did hit a milder spell, which is fine for my pale skin (though I was surprised by how quickly my normally ignored skin dried out). While I enjoyed my time touring around I have to admit my fave thing was hanging with my friend on her patio watching the many ducks that would make their way down the creek (no duckling sightings, unfortunately). There was even a guest appearance by a couple of deer. Overall an excellent and appreciated getaway.

Kevin Can F**K Himself

When Younger moved to Paramount+ it also started airing on Hulu but I’ve yet to check in on this final season which wraps June 10, overall it was a fun series. Flack (Am), Evil (Para+), and Tuca and Bertie (Ad Sw) have all been picked up but on different networks giving them another go; I liked each enough to check out but not going to pay more at this point to check out my fave of those Evil. GIRLS5EVA

I’ve been chipping away at a few shows and caught Cruel Summer, which was a little disjointed with the multiple timelines but I’ll check again. And the combo of The Parker Andersons and Amelia Parker which was sweet but not something I need right now. I’ve been sticking with L&O: OC, Rebel, Home Economics, The Equalizer, Clarice, and Kung Fu to see where things lead and barely hanging in with Debris, which is an interesting premise but I can’t seem to care. Sometimes I do just want to watch tv rather than yet another streaming show for some reason. Dropped Chad as I can’t take another cringeworthy coming of age comedy. Looking ahead I’ll go back in with Mythic Quest while I still have Apple TV. I’ve never started Handmaid’s Tale, I feel like I heard great things about the first season and then never heard about it again.

I caught up on much-recommended Derry Girls on Netflix which was cute. And though Younger returns this week on Paramount+ I’m going to hold out until it’s found elsewhere (should come back to TV Land later this year) and will tune in for the special ep from Mythic Quest though may hold out until the second season is here. And apparently, the series finale for Queen Sugar is coming down but I have the whole season so far saved, busy busy..

procrastinator’s must-see movies of 2020

The Old Guard

Well, I rolled off of my catch-up for 2019 seemingly right into the pandemic. The only movie I remember seeing in a theater this last year was 2019’s Knives Out. Can that be true? Well, someday we’ll be back to feeling comfortable in theaters, until then lots of stuff available on streaming. While I was being relatively budget-conscious this year I did throw down to pay for a couple of last-minute picks because I knew I’d be doing this list but there are certainly more to be seen. For Critic’s picks, you can check out Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes for a consensus.

  1. The Old Guard – This is the first movie I remember watching when I decided I was going to start doing a Saturday Night Movie to give some meaning to my weekends during the pandemic, and I just remember it was fun, I’m totally on board for Charlize Theron taking this immortals(?) mercenaries action series into franchise territory.
  2. Promising Young Woman – Revenge done very wrong, in this thriller masking as a comedy Carey Mulligan does a beautiful job embodying the double life of this cunning young woman so obviously broken by experiences she couldn’t avert, will she or can she get revenge?
  3. Palm Springs – You can’t shake a stick without hitting a time loop movie or tv show but this Adam Sandler and Christin Milioti showcase hit fresh notes through their chemistry and hijinks as well as the more esoteric questions.
  4. The Vast of Night – This ’50s set sci-fi/mystery has such a throwback tone but is oddly compelling as two high school kids chase the source of a mysterious audio frequency, does it get them more than they bargained for?
  5. The Half of It – This Cyrano style romance gives us a new flavor of the take as we’re as captivated by shy high schooler Ellie as her target is by her letters, as she befriends the jock she’s writing for, complications and sweetness ensue.
  6. On the Rocks – Sofia Coppola brings a fun look at a daughter, Rashida Jones, and estranged father, Bill Murray, reconnecting through her suspicions about her husband.
  7. One Night in Miami – Most of these plays turned movies feel stilted but this incredible night of icons Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke, and Malcom X connecting is thoughtfully and beautifully brought to life by Regina King.
  8. Nomadland, Minari, Never Rarely Sometimes Always – These three films bring an interesting look at simpler yet not more straightforward stories of people just trying to make it.

Debris

I wrapped up the final season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a series I always wanted to like more than I did, but clearly stuck with. And Mrs America which had great performances in a non feels like I’m watching a history lesson version of the movement to pass the ERA. CBS All Access is rebranding as Paramount+ (because all streaming versions are apparently using the +) so you’ll start to see that, and I’ll have to consider how to manage still not subscribing when they bring back favorite Ink Master (I have purchased seasons of The Good Fight after they hooked me with the free first season).
