let things stand alone

Law & Order Premiere Event

I’m the kind of person who really hates to miss the beginning of a movie. And I can’t jump into a series midway. What have I missed? What clue to the characters or situation is going to be lost on me?

So I have to say I am over all the media having to be tied into one another.

Just this week alone:

  • Law & Order – A super cross-over event (I was a little behind on this) I’ve bailed on SVU and OC but had been dabbling with the reboot of the original and one of the things I like about that show is an episode is an episode. But nooo, in a crossover event things span in this case three episodes. So I made an exception and caught all three. At least since I had watched the other shows I knew who most of the characters were but overall although they created an arc for each one there were a bunch of detectives bopping in and out of each. Preposterous. And with all of the related shows, 911s/FBIs/NCISs/CSIs/Chicago whatever, this obviously isn’t isolated.
  • The Rookie: Feds – I didn’t stick with the original The Rookie and I’m pretty sure they launched this as a backdoor pilot over there. So of course Nathan Fillion pops up as a street cop that our main protagonist has some sort of relationship with. And overall these characters all have relationships and stories that I have no idea what’s happening. And not in an of course all characters will have backstory kind of way. It made me less engaged in the characters and story. So whether your spinoff is a character taking a new journey, a sequel/prequel, or just a backdoor pilot seems like you could make it work as a standalone show.
  • Morbius – Marvel is probably the worst. The few movies I’ve liked the most are ones that stand alone. I’ve come to put up with a random guest appearance and an end cap that teases something else. But those are few and far between these days. As homework to watch the final Avengers I think you had to watch 30+ movies. And that’s not counting any series. And the bummer is that even when something is supposed to be kind of a dud like Eternals or Morbius I feel compelled to complete them.

And in addition to feeling like I have to watch every Marvel movie to understand what’s happening in any of them, I suppose I’m supposed to subscribe to Disney+ to watch all the tv shows as well. It’s just exhausting.

I’m also for the record totally over anything that’s a trilogy. The first movie or book never seems to work as a standalone event (I’m looking at you Dune movie and The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet book, so regardless of whether I would have enjoyed all three, I’m out!

I know one aspect of this strategy is giving people more of the kinds of properties that they want. But the other strategy of making you feel like you’re missing out if you don’t watch them all just seems manipulative and greedy.

Will I stop watching Marvel? Maybe not. But I am drawing the line somewhere.

Rant complete. Does this bug anyone else?

intriguing new fall tv

Alaska Daily

Not a huge surprise that there’s a ton of derivative tv (reboots, remakes, prequels, etc.) and while that doesn’t mean it’s bad I’m always hopeful for something that isn’t just a rock block of cops. I’ll be tuning in to see if any of these get added to season passes. Since the network barely scratches the surface of new offerings I did include a handful of cable and streaming as well that I might keep my eye on. Along with some returning fall favorites and an endless backlog of options.

  • Monarch (Fox, Sunday 9/11) – A little old-fashioned soapy family dynasty with a country twist, I caught the first which in fact felt a little old-fashioned
  • Quantum Leap (NBC, Monday 9/19) – I’m sure I watched a few of these and I remember it fondly, though Bakula declined to be a part of it we will have to tune in to see if this scenario from the past of the week is captivating and if there’s a new spin.
  • The Rookie: Feds (ABC, 9/27) – For all you Rookie fans, I like me some Nathan Fillion but didn’t stick with it for whatever reason, we’ll see how Niecy Nash in the FBI version does.
  • So Help Me Todd (CBS, 9/29) – With Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin as a mother/son duo who have different sensibilities about adherence to the law as attorney and PI, let’s hope they’re able to shine.
  • East New York (CBS, 10/2) – A newly promoted deputy inspector looks to lead the police to protect and serve.
  • Family Law (CW, 10/2) – Abby’s a mess and the only way she can keep practicing law is with the help of her estranged father and his new family members.
  • Alaska Daily (ABC, 10/6) – Hilary Swank as a big-time journalist looking into small-town Indigenous Alaska issues is likely worth a look.
  • Walker Independence (CW, Thursday 10/6) – Prequels seem to be having a thing, look at the Walker’s journey out west.
  • Fire Country (CBS, 10/7) – Prisoners get to knock time of their sentence by fighting fires, and one prisoners ends up back in his home town.
  • The Winchesters (CW, Tuesday 10/11) – For fans of Supernatural a prequel about Sam and Dean’s parents.
  • Lopez vs Lopez (NBC, Friday 11/4) – Father and daughter George and Mayan Lopez star in this family comedy.

Some cable and streaming highlights:

  • Reboot (Hulu, 9/20) – A comedic look at bringing a sitcom cast back together, enough quality peeps I hope it gives them something to work with.
  • Interview with a Vampire (AMC, 10/2) – The story has been told but it’s not a bad one, Anne Rice in as EP.
  • A Friend of the Family (Pea, 10/6) – If you’ve seen the documentary Abducted in Plain Sight you might get de ja vu, a scripted take.
  • Let the Right One In (Show, 10/9) – More repurposed tales, the movie was good so maybe a series about a 12-year-old vampire.
  • High School (Freeveem, 10/14) – Based on the high school memoir of Tegan and Sara it looks like a good perspective and it’s got a nice pedigree.
  • Shantaram (App+, 10/14) – Charlie Hunnam as a fugitive getting lost in Bombay, sure.
  • From Scratch (Net, 10/21) – Zoe Saldana and her husband in a book adaptation about an American woman who falls for a Sicilian chef in Italy.
  • Dangerous Liaisons (Starz, 11/7) – Right another one of these.
  • The English (Am, Nov) – 1900s Western English woman played by Emily Blunt shows up to avenge her son’s death.
  • Tulsa King (Paramount+, 11/13) – I’m not optimistic about Stallone’s acting abilities though happy to eat my words, but intrigued by the tale of ex con trying to build a new crew by the Yellowstone creators.
  • Welcome to Chippendales (Hulu, 11/22) – The story of an Indian immigrant who founded the male-stripping empire.
  • Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin (Pea, 11/23) – A spinoff of the movie, we follow one of the characters to Germany.
  • Also slated for November: Wednesday (Net), Kindred (AMC), Fleishman is in Trouble (Hulu), and The Idol (HBO).

Stay tuned for new and noteworthy for reminders and additional fare. And things change so please check your local listings.

Quantum Leap

I finished catching up on the series finale of Motherland: Fort Salem, and while it had its moments it was a little too uneven for a solid recco. I’m getting started on some new streaming, both Better Call Saul and Lucifer. I’ve been looking for a new light show after I finished The OC, my polling turned me toward Jane the Virgin, but while light and pretty well done, a little too overtly soapy for me.

I did end up throwing down for Paramount+ and started the new season of Ink Master. The format is pretty much the same with new hosts, judges, and guest appearances by Dave Navarro, with returning competitors and tattoos still at the center I’m in. I am also starting to catch up on Evil and The Good Fight.

We’re getting into fall, check out my last post to see what I’m looking forward to returning. And for this phase, I’ll check out the new Quantum Leap. I will also preview more new fall tv next week.

  • The Light in the Hall (SundN) Series Premiere, Thursday 9/15 – Psychological thriller where a man is released 18 years after confessing to murder.
  • Vampire Academy (Pea) Series Premiere, Thursday 9/15 – Teen drama and vampires are might not be a bad combination.
  • Quantum Leap (NBC) Series Premiere, Monday 9/19, 10pm – A reboot of the Scott Bakula series where a new guy gets swept up in different lives at different times, I vaguely remember this but can’t recall the logic.
  • Reboot (Hulu) Series Premiere, Tuesday 9/20 – A comedy about the rebooting of a sitcom and the dysfunctional cast.
  • Andor (Dis+) Series Premiere, Wednesday 9/21 – Another Star Wars thing.
  • Thai Cave Rescue (Net) Series Premiere, Thursday 9/22 – I get this was a dramatic moment but can’t they draw straws or something so we don’t get all these at once?
  • Finding Happy (Bounce) Series Premiere, Saturday 9/24, 8pm – A dramedy starting with one woman’s unhappy 36th birthday

Streaming around the globe:

  • El Rey, Vicente Fernandez (Mexican drama – Net, 9/14)
  • Heartbreak High (Australian drama – Net, 9/14)
  • The Lorenskog Disappearance (Scandinavian drama – Net, 9/14)
  • The Brave Ones (South African drama – Net, 9/16)
  • Santo (Spanish drama – Net, 9/16)
  • Only for Love (Brazilian romantic drama – Net, 9/21)
  • The Cage (Arabic drama – Net, 9/23)
  • The Girls at the Back (Spanish drama – Net, 9/23)

Returning streaming: Ada Twist: Scientist (Net, 9/12), Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Net, 9/13), Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu, 9/14), Dogs in Space (Net, 9/15), The Grand Tour (Am, 9/16), Fate: The Winx Saga (Net, 9/16), The Great British Baking Show (Net, 9/16), Seal Team (Para+, 9/18), Backstrom (Acorn, 9/19), Go Dog Go (Net, 9/19), The Kardashians (Hulu, 9/22), The Hype (HBOM, 9/22), Karma’s World (Net, 9/22), Snabba Cash (Net, 9/22), September Mornings (Am, 9/23), Jamtara (Net, 9/23), Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace (HBOM, 9/23).

returning fall favorites

Ghosts

Labor Day signals the unofficial start of fall so let’s take a look at a few of the network shows I’m looking forward to returning.

  • The Conners/Abbott Elementary/Home Economics (ABC, Wednesday 9/21) – Abbott Elementary was the belle of the ball last season, and deservedly so, it’s funny and sweet and holds together well. I’m still appreciating The Conners and Home Economics is funny enough as the characters develop.
  • Law and Order (NBC, Thursday 9/22) – This didn’t totally capture the old-school L&O magic for me, and the crossovers to series I don’t watch might get me, but I’ll give it a few more.
  • Bobs Burgers (Fox, Sunday 9/25) – I did a catch-up on this and now I guess can watch real-time, I guess.
  • La Brea (NBC, Tuesday 9/27) – This was the dumbest show, but there was something so cheesy about it I couldn’t turn away, not sure I’ll stick with it but we’ll see.
  • Ghosts (CBS, Thursday 9/29) – This was the other highlight of last season, a remake of an English show (that is also supposed to be funny) the ghosts from different eras coming together with our present-day caretakers is a treat.
  • Call Me Kat (Fox, Thursday 9/29) – This show barely makes the cut but there is something appealing about the characters that makes me smile if not laugh, following Welcome to Flatch which I could not stick with last season.
  • The Equalizer (CBS, Sunday 10/2) – I mean Queen Latifa kicking ass for the good guys, this scratches a certain itch.
  • Coroner (CW, Sunday 10/2) – This is a classic murder of the week with some overarching drama surrounding our protagonist, one of the Canadian imports I enjoyed.

Midseason or TBA returns: Grand Crew (NBC), American Auto (NBC), 9-1-1: Lone Star (Fox), Transplant (NBC), Making It (NBC).

Things change, please check your local listings.

The Patient

I caught up with Bob’s Burgers and caught the movie last weekend. It’s one of the few animated series I tend to find pretty amusing. I did catch Little Demon (Fxx) this last week which was cute enough, but not sure I’d stick with it. I also finished my rewatch of The OC, which was pretty fun, even if the first season was really the best. I polled for a new ‘light’ show to pick up. The votes leaned to Jane the Virgin which I got about 4 through. It’s really cute but maybe a little too soapy in style for me (I know The OC was super soapy but teen drama for me hits differently). I also started riding my inside bike again so finished off the amusing This Way Up (Hulu). I also dabbled in The Golden Palace, the Golden Girls sequel because Hulu seemed to really think I should watch it. Didn’t quite capture the original’s charm. I also caught the first Leonardo (CW) and big pass but I might tune in for another Welcome to Wrexham (Fx/Hulu) to see where it’s going.

Ink Master is hitting Paramount + on 9/7 which looks like it’s rolling out weekly through November so I need to decide whether I’m going to do a Paramount + binge now or wait til it’s all done, 7 days free, and then $5/mo for the cheapest version. Yes, I’m picking channels based on a reality show. I found the old version of this really fun though not knowing if the reboot (this is technically season 14) will be the same, judging by the last season it would be $20 to purchase the SD version so comparable to 4 months of viewing. Plus I’ve bought a couple of seasons of The Good Fight which I’m behind on (because I was awaiting this decision). It is also dropping its final season starting 9/8 to wrap in early November. I would plan to not get caught up in anything new so I could cut bait, but I could catch up on Evil too while I’m there. Shoot I wonder what else is on there.

Ok, what’s next:

  • US Open Tennis (ESPN) – First round starting Monday 8/29.
  • The Patient (Fx/Hulu) Series Premiere, Tuesday 8/30 – Steve Carell as a therapist held hostage by a murderous patient, can he unravel both of their issues, by the makers of The Americans, yes, please.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Am) Series Premiere, Thursday 9/1 – More Lord of the Rings action, set before the films.
  • Life by Ella (App+) Series Premiere, Friday 9/2 – A 13-year-old after a life-changing experience.
  • Recipes for Love and Murder (Acorn) Series Premiere, Monday 9/5 – Based on a Tannie Maria Mystery this follows a recipe advice columnist who also helps investigate crimes in her small town.
  • Tell Me Lies (Hulu) Series Premiere, Wednesday 9/7 – A relationship over the course of 8 years, from college to consequences.
  • Wedding Season (Hulu) Series Premiere, Thursday 9/8 – Is an affair reason for murder, two suspects try to prove their innocence.
  • Last Light (Pea) Series Premiere, Thursday 9/8 – Based on the novel, a family deals with an oil crisis that leaves them separated and in danger.
  • Monarch (Fox) Series Premiere, Sunday 9/11, 8pm – Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins head up a country music dynasty in what looks like a very soapy drama.
  • The Serpent Queen (Starz) Series Premiere, Sunday 9/11, 8pm – A period drama about the life of Catherine de’Medici.
  • American Gigolo (Show) Series Premiere, Sunday 9/11, 9pm – John Bernthal picks up the present-day version of the ’80s movie, which I’m not sure I’ve ever seen.

Streaming around the globe:

  • Family Secrets (Net, 8/31 – Polish drama)
  • Off the Hook (Net, 9/1 – French comedy)
  • You’re Nothing Special (Net, 9/2 – Spanish drama)
  • Little Women (Net, 9/3 – Korean drama)

  • Grid (Hulu, 9/7 – drama)
  • Entrapped (Net, 9/8 – Scandanavian drama)

I tried Bump which for me was a pass. I wrapped the latest season of The Boys which I guess has always been brutal but it might be getting to be too much for me. And Deutschland 83 before moving on to Deutschland 86/89, it’s got kind of an Americans feel but intrigued by the time jump and new scenarios layered in with ongoing characters.

The series finale of Better Call Saul is coming up so I’m ready to start diving in (for some reason if I’m not current with a show I prefer it to be complete). I’ll also be checking out the new season of Making the Cut on Amazon on Friday, the finale of Only Murders on 8/23, and the series finales of Animal Kingdom and Motherland: Fort Salem, caught up with the former (not looking good for our boys) but not the latter.

  • Leonardo (CW) Series Premiere, Tuesday 8/6, 8pm – I don’t have high hopes for this da Vinci historical drama.
  • She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Dis+) Series Premiere, Thursday 8/18 – Tatiana Maslany is great in general so hope this is a good one, though I cannot keep up with Marvel at this point.
  • The Undeclared War (Pea) Series Premiere, Thursday 8/18 – In the near future, the clock is ticking with online enemies.
  • Bad Sisters (App+) Series Premiere, Friday 8/19 – A dark comedy by Sharon Horgan about sisters under suspicion after brother-in-law’s death, looks promising.
  • Sprung (Free) Series Premiere, Friday 8/19 – A new comedy by Greg Garcia, returning with some of his Raising Hope cast, following formerly incarcerated peeps using their expertise for good.
  • Surfside Girls (App+) Series Premiere, Friday 8/19 – Besties investigate supernatural mysteries.
  • Echoes (Net) Series Premiere, Friday 8/19 – Michelle Monaghan plays identical twins who have switched places and one disappears.
  • House of the Dragon (HBO) Series Premiere, Sunday, 8/21, 9pm – Based on the George RR Martin book “Fire & Blood” focuses on House Targaryen 200 years before “Game of Thrones,” which I never saw.
  • Anne (Acorn) Series Premiere, Monday 8/22 – A mother works to prove the death of her son wasn’t accidental, sounded kind of snores but early reviews are positive.
  • Queer Eye: Brazil (Net) Series Premiere, Wednesday 8/24 – Reality spotlight, I mean there’s something about random countries having their own Fab Five that kind of intrigues me
  • Welcome to Wrexham (Fx) Series Premiere, Wednesday 8/24 – Reality spotlight, have to admit I’m kind of intrigued by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds buying a 5th-tier Welsh football club and rooting for their success.
  • Mo (Net) Series Premiere, Wednesday 8/24 – Struggling between cultures in Texas while hosting to support his Palestinian family in this heartfelt comedy.
  • Mike (Hulu) Series Premiere, 8/25 – The story of Mike Tyson gets a look in this limited series drama.

A League of Their Own

I appreciate that things are at least a little calmer with new tv during the summer. I cruised through The Old Man and DarkWinds, the former started out stronger and lost a little for me while the other was the opposite as I got to know more of the characters, I’ll tune back in for another season of both. I also tried to watch Flowers in the Attic: The Origin because we had randomly talked about how weird those books were but couldn’t make it past the first ep.

Looking forward to the return of Reservation Dogs and Resident Alien. I’ll also likely continue with Never Have I Ever which is cute enough. And started on Deutschland 83 for some fun spy capers and The Bear for family/culinary drama, so far so good.

  • Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head (Para+) Series Premiere, Thursday 8/4 – Ok so I guess this is back in some form.
  • The Sandman (Net) Series Premiere, Friday 8/5 – Based on a comic book this drama shows an actual sandman who tries to revive his kingdom after being captured.
  • Darby and Joan (Acorn) Series Premiere, Monday 8/8 – Two strangers meet while on the road in the Australian outback.
  • Send Help (AllBlk) Series Premiere, Thursday 8/11 – A dark comedy about a first-gen Haitian American overcoming the challenges of ‘making it’ in Hollywood.

Uncoupled

I’ve been making some progress on The OC, though nothing can match that first season it’s still enjoyable. I wrapped the first season of the anthology series The Terror and decided not to dive back in for another brutal story (too dark thematically for me). I also wrapped Stranger Things which was entertaining enough (I always find the series middling but enjoyable) but felt like a little bit too much of a bridge to the final season. I dabbled with Only Murders which I’m enjoying and The Boys which might be losing its luster (for me). I also tried Everythings’s Trash which I’ll give another but didn’t immediately pull me in with its comedy and characters.

This week I’m doing some catch-up on The Old Man, Motherland: Fort Salem, Dark Winds, and Animal Kingdom, and while new streaming is not at the top of my list might check out The Resort and Uncoupled.

  • Rap Sh!t (HBOM) Series Premiere, Thursday 7/21 – Two estranged high school friends form a rap group, from Issa Rae.
