intriguing new fall tv

Since I’m not privy to any early looks my eager to watch list is most influenced by early critical chatter, pedigree of cast and creators, and a good premise doesn’t hurt. But like the rest of the world it’s a matter of watching an episode, or four, to see what’s really worth watching.

Following are what has most caught my attention:

  • American Horror Story (FX, 10/5) / Homeland (Show, 10/2) – The two shows I’m actually most intrigued by, first a weekly family drama/horror story… we’ll see how it works ongoing but Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott…  And then good buzz about this who’s the bad guy in Iraq POW returns home with Life‘s Damien Lewis and Claire Danes, did I mention I don’t get Showtime?
  • Grimm (NBC, 10/21) / Once Upon a Time (ABC, 10/23) – I’m a fan of a fairy tale reinvention and these two shows each bring a different take, first a police procedural, only with the possibility that the murderer is the actual big bad wolf, while the second is a slightly lighter look as a woman in the ‘real world’ find she’s the descendant of Snow White and we get a look at the characters in both fantasy and present day worlds, described as a good mix of mythology and whimsy.
  • Hart of Dixie (CW, 9/26) / New Girl (Fox, 9/20) – Don’t fight it, Zoey Deschanal and Rachel Bilson are adorable, so here’s hoping their fish out of water shows are well done with the big city doc goes country and the newly single awkward gal moves in with the dudes.
  • Person of Interest (CBS, 9/22) / Prime Suspect (NBC, 9/22) – New procedurals worth a shot, looking to solve crimes before they happen with a mix of technology and brute force, bringing Lost creator and previously creepy Ben Linus back caught my eye and Maria Bello’s turn as detective may not match the English version but could hold interest on its own.
  • Ringer (CW, 9/13) – Three words, Sarah Michelle Gellar, but to be honest this drama about a twin on the run taking over the life of her sister that no one knows is believed to be dead has some mixed reviews, but I’ll give it a couple goes to see what the former Buffy can bring.
  • Suburgatory (ABC, 9/28) / Two Broke Girls (CBS, 9/19) / Up All Night (NBC, 9/14) – Bring on the funny, a little quirky and a few good casts may work in these, quirky moved to a new odd suburb, odd couple gals with no dough, and Will Arnett and Christina Applegate raising a baby with Maya Rupdolph as comic relief.
  • Terra Nova (Fox, 9/26) – The talk on this hasn’t been awesome but everyone seems to want to see the Steven Spielberg big concept big budget folks from the future living in an alt dinosaur living world show.
  • The X-Factor (Fox, 9/21) – I’m not sure if the fact that I’m totally over American Idol bodes well for my liking of this show, but my missing of Simon might be enough, though to be honest I’m not sure how the format differs.

These are looking less favorable for one reason or another but there’s often a gem in the bunch:

  • Allen Gregory (Fox, 10/30) – The latest in the animation domination, this has Jonah Hill voicing a fish out of water rich kid hits public school.
  • Boss (Starz, 10/21) – Kelsey Grammer’s latest turn as ruthless politician looks intriguing but I just don’t get Starz.
  • Charlie’s Angels (ABC, 9/22) – I actually enjoyed the Drew Barrymore movies so had hopes with her exec producing, but pretty girls may not be enough.
  • Enlightened (HBO, 10/10) – I haven’t heard much about this new half hour dramedy where Laura Dern has some sort of office break and tries to turn things around.
  • Free Agents (NBC, 9/14) – Bad critical buzz makes me doubtful about PR office romance with Hank Azaria and Kathryn Hahn.
  • A Gifted Man (CBS, 9/23) – Neurosurgeon’s dead wife acts as his conscience, perhaps lands on the sappy side.
  • H8R (CW, 9/14) – You couldn’t pay me to watch celebs confront people who hate them.
  • How to Be a Gentleman (CBS, 9/29) – More bad buzz for another odd couple take as the rough and the refined roommates try to balance each other out.
  • I Hate My Teenage Daughter (Fox, 11/30) – And yet more bad critical buzz about popular and maybe not nice daughters and the mothers that may not always like them.
  • Last Man Standing (ABC, 10/11) – If you missed Home Improvement Tim Allen is back with more family – this time he has daughters – jokes.
  • Man Up! (ABC, 10/18) – Video gamers try to be men doesn’t look worth more than a look.
  • Pan Am (ABC, 9/25) – This is one of the two period shows that is supposedly not as good as Mad Men, though this is thought to be the better of the two.
  • The Playboy Club (NBC, 9/19) – This is the other period show not supposed to have much of interest.
  • Reed Between the Lines (BET, 10/11) – Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends) and Malcolm-Jamal Warner (Cosby) play a therapist and professor couple.
  • Revenge (ABC, 9/21) – This looks cheesy, which isn’t bad, but I don’t see the legs in the premise of girl hits the Hamptons for soapy justice.
  • The Secret Circle (CW, 9/15) – I always kind of want to like these cheesy other worldly shows, this one witches, but my hope is not high.
  • Unforgettable (CBS, 9/20) – This is one of those gimmick procedurals, she never forgets anything… not sure the cast and writing hold up.
  • Whitney (NBC, 9/22) – Whitney is actually supposedly funny but this pilot at least is supposedly not.

Shows mostly listed in alphabetical order and all premiere dates are of course subject to change.

Thursday

  • The Vampire Diaries/The Secret Circle (CW, 9/10pm – SS replays 9/16 9pm) Season/Series Premiere – Vampires and then witches, which I will check out, might be dumb but it’s got that cute girl from Life Unexpected.

returning fall favorites

The drought is almost over, and as I wait for the critics to chime in on what’s worth a watch of the new crop of shows, we can take a look at what I’m most looking forward to returning.

  • Bones (Fox, 11/3) – Of the procedurals this still is probably my fave, like all the characters, and curious to see how the Booth/Bones baby will play.
  • Community (NBC, 9/22) – Embracing pop culture and media to the hilt, way more hits than misses with our pack of misfits.
  • The Good Wife (CBS, 9/25) – They’ve done an excellent job making each character and each storyline dimensional enough that I’m intrigued by it all, this season will the good wife be a little bad?
  • Modern Family (ABC, 9/21) – This show is a little uneven for me, but when it’s on, it’s on and the mix of family characters makes me laugh.
  • Parenthood (NBC, 9/13) – I had written this show off early but after a marathon I ended up falling a little bit in love with the Bravermans and their family drama, and Lauren Graham and Peter Krause don’t hurt.
  • Parks & Recreation (NBC, 9/22) – This show has really found its stride with the small town politics and their quirky crew, adding Rob Lowe and Adam Scott was also surprisingly a great move.
  • Sons of Anarchy (FX, 9/6) – It’s just too fun to watch these bad boys try to do good, and sometimes try to do bad, a hunky lead and complex family and motorcycle club relations keep me coming back for more.
  • The Walking Dead (AMC, 10/16) – I am thoroughly intrigued as to how they’re going to keep the story of these survivors of the Zombie-pocolypse going after a short season intro, although I’ve learned not to watch before bed, I can’t wait for season two.

Honorable Mention (TiVo Season Passes): ANTM (CW, 9/14), The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 9/22), Castle (ABC, 9/19), Chuck (NBC, 10/21), Dexter (Show, 10/2), Glee (Fox, 9/20), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 9/22), HIMYM (CBS, 9/19),  House (Fox, 10/3), It’s Always Sunny (FX, 9/15), L&O: SVU (NBC, 9/21), The Mentalist (CBS, 9/22), The Office (NBC, 9/22).

Shows listed in alphabetical order and all premiere dates are of course subject to change.

new summer show roundup

Well it’s that time of year again, the summer fluff is mostly out. And what do I think so far?

  • Alphas (Syfy) Stay Tuned – This is yet another spin on the Heroes theme, certain folks have unique abilities, this time they’re working with the government to stop the evil but good and evil just might not be all that clear, this isn’t as campy as some which may make it more watchable or may make it less engaging.
  • Awkward (Mtv) Stay Tuned – The high school awkward phase has been done before but there’s just a dash enough of good writing to make the characters and situations interesting, will she make it work with her crush, or is there another guy out there for her, and how much humiliation in the interim.
  • Combat Hospital (ABC) Tune Out – Grey’s Anatomy at war didn’t engage me enough to stick through the first episode which maybe isn’t fair or maybe watching at least part was more time than it was worth.
  • Falling Skies (TNT) Tune Out – I was borderline on this, it’s not a bad show, about putting up the good fight after an alien invasion, but I just found I didn’t much care about the battles or the relationships.
  • The Glee Project (Oxy) Tune In – This is my favorite new show, it has all the ingredients of a singing competition, but the combination of elements in each episode (initial challenge, music video, and final singing for save) and the reality of competing for a role in a specific show with really talented kids makes it a must see.
  • Franklin & Bash (TNT) Stay Tuned – The cases and premise are pretty dumb but Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer are still somehow kind of endearing in their rebellious lawyer style.
  • Happily Divorced (TVL) Tune Out – Unless you have really been missing The Nanny, this dated feeling sitcom about Fran living with her gay now ex husband is a pass.
  • Love Bites (NBC) Stay Tuned – This show didn’t catch on but it was actually a pretty good take on the romcom, boiling every possible story down to three vignettes an episode.
  • Necessary Roughness (USA) Stay Tuned – A newly separated shrink gets what seems like a windfall when she’s asked to help out professional football player, but athletes, the team’s staff, and her family may still all be too crazy, she’s pretty likable in the overarching football story but the weekly cases in other sports seem a little too pat.
  • The Nine Lives of Chloe King (ABCFam) Tune Out – Always willing to give the weird a shot, in this version this girl finds she’s descended from some sort of cat people, she’s the hope of the race but unfortunately may kill anyone she gets kissy with, will she survive long enough to… whatever it is she’s supposed to do, just nothing really to grab onto.
  • The Protector (Life) Tune Out – Not a terrible show but just nothing noteworthy about this police procedural where the title character is a woman trying to balance family and work.
  • State of Georgia (ABCFam) Tune Out – Raven-Symoné and Majandra Delfino attempt to play this generation’s Lucy and Ethel and I just can’t get on board.
  • Suits (USA) Stay Tuned – It’s unbelievable that a lawyer would risk it all to hire a non law school grad to his firm that only hires Harvard grads, but this all business ‘closer’ has a dynamic with his protege who reads and learns it all protege that is keeping me engaged.
  • Switched at Birth (ABCFam) Tune Out – This show was actually sort of sweet in the look at the families and difficulties of two girls who learn they were the biological daughters of different families but it was a little too sappy too keep up with.
  • Teen Wolf (MTV) Tune Out – I was intrigued by the new guy as wolf trying to balance that along with friends and romance but it just got too stupid.
  • Web Therapy (Show) Stay Tuned – I wanted to like this Lisa Kudrow as internet shrink as her web series made the leap to broadcast, but couldn’t quite enjoy her terrible advice or uncomfortable relationship with her husband.
  • Wilfred (Fx) Tune In – The US update to the wacky Australian concept where a guy sees a dog as a man in a dog suit is super odd but I can’t turn away as I wait for whatever unpredictable hijinks Wilfred will get them into.

What else is sticking around in the TiVo queue: Burn Notice, Celebrity Rehab, Closer, Drop Dead Diva, In Plain Sight, Leverage, Louie, Project Runway, White Collar and on occasion but tenuous Eureka, Glades, Rizzoli & Isles.

I do tend to take a pass on most new reality fare.
