So there’s not really anything new or noteworthy this week unless you’re particularly excited about the American Country Countdown Awards. And I barely made it through 15 minutes of last week’s Containment. Which at least should give me some downtime to keep whittling down my TiVo backlog and chipping away on my latest Netflix items Daredevil and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And perhaps make some progress on my book before the next book club.

So a hard pass last week on Hunters and Game of Silence with a soft pass on The Detour which just didn’t quite win me over to the family trip gone awry. I also renegotiated my cable package and refrained from upgrading one level which would have gotten me back into Spike and added Sundance. I’m not sure TV is the area where I need to budget but there’s just something about spending money when I already have too much tv to watch, though I am still holding out for next seasons of Rectify and Returned to be available.
- Containment (CW) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 9pm – There’s some sort of outbreak in Atlanta, I’ll take a look though not overly optimistic about this off time CW release.
- The Night Manager (AMC) Mini-series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – This looks like it might be worth a watch, based on a John le Carre Novel, anything with Hugh Laurie in it has potential.
- Time Traveling Bong (Com) Mini-series Premiere, Wednesday, 10:30 – I’ll pass on this but if you’re an Ilana Glazer of Broad City fan might be worth a look.
- Rebellion (Sund) Mini-series Premiere, Sunday, 9pm – Another pass for me on what looks like a lackluster historical drama about the Easter Rising in Ireland.

Well I’ve finally wrapped X-Files and though I enjoyed some of the revisits, and feel accomplished to have caught up to the new eps, this isn’t the greatest example of a successful reboot (though apparently ratings and interest were high enough that we’re likely to see more). Glad to free up some queue space, I feel like I need to knock off the rest of Returned before I dig into the next season of Daredevil or House of Cards plus of course Orphan Black comes back this week.
- The Detour (TBS) Series Premiere, Monday, 9pm – Always willing to check out a new comedy though this road trip from hell might not be up my ally.
- Hunters (Syfy) Series Premiere, Monday, 10pm – The latest terrorist/aliens plot might not bring much fresh.
- Game of Silence (NBC) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – Secrets from 25 years ago and secrets from today feels like a retread of something else but might offer some intrigue.
- The Last Panthers (Sund) Series Premiere, Wednesday 10pm – I’ll always check out a heist drama though I don’t get this channel.
- Orphan Black (BBCA) Season Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – The clone clubs activities may sometimes get muddled but the myriad of sisters are always a win.
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Net) Season Premiere, Friday, 3am – This had a cute and entertaining first season and I’m looking forward to what Kimmy gets into next.

I’ll only tune into the finale of Idol if they promise to bring back Dunkleman.
- American Idol (Fox) Series Finale, Thursday, 8pm – I’ve been off this for some time but it really was quite the era of musical searching.
- The Odd Couple (CBS) Season Premiere, Thursday 8:30pm – In case those of you forgot about this like I did.
- Catastrophe (Am) Season Premiere, Friday – This show gets some good buzz though still holding out on paying for Amazon.
- The Girlfriend Experience (Starz) Series Premiere, Sunday 8pm – A new spin from the Soderbergh movie, this is supposed to be intriguing.
- Fear the Walking Dead (AMC) Season Premiere, Sunday, 9pm – I didn’t love the first season of this and already being behind on Walking Dead proper I’m tempted to skip it.

I’m still in denial about shows on ‘networks’ like Hulu though this one could be worth a look. Otherwise a few more options that could kill some time but probably won’t.
- The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke (CBS) Tuesday, 10pm – James Corden celebrates a year of his show.
- The Path (Hulu) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 3am – Bringing Aaron Paul back to television for a dramatic look at cult life.
- Lopez (TVL) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – George Lopez returns to comedy playing what looks like a version of himself.
- Rush Hour (CBS) Series Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – Remember this movie with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker… well it’s being made into a tv show with some other guys.
- The Ranch (Net) Series Premiere, Friday, 3am – Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson are together again in this latest comedy where Kutcher apparently returns home to the family ranch.
- Wynonna Earp (Syfy) Series Premiere, Friday, 10pm – Wyatt Earp’s great granddaughter fights the supernatural based on the comic.
- Academy of Country Music Awards (CBS) Sunday, 8pm – Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley host, and if those names mean something to you, you might enjoy this.
- Miami Open (ESPN2) Wed-Sun, 10am – Hard court season continues.

I’ve been taking this lull to try to polish off my X-Files viewing but of course there is more left than I thought.
- Everything is Copy (HBO) Monday, 9pm – A look a Nora Ephron that’s rumored to be well done.
- Heartbeat (NBC) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 9pm – This heart surgeon medical drama with Melissa George just looks bad and I haven’t heard anything critical to dissuade me of that.
- You, Me, Her (Dir) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 9pm – A married couple adds an escort to their romantic life, ok.
- The Catch (ABC) Series Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – Willing to have some hopes for this Peter Krause/Mireille Enos Con Man/PI show.
new and noteworthy tv: 3/14-3/20
The shows are starting to back up on me again but I’ll find room for a couple returns. Though I’ll take a look at the new ones as well.
- Crowded (NBC) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – I am always willing to tune into Patrick Warburton in a new half hour comedy even if I’m not sure this adult kids return home version is supposed to be any good.
- Happy Valley (Net) Season Premiere, Wednesday, 3am – I have yet to catch this series but hear good things about it, anyone in on this?
- The Americans (Fx) Season Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – As I’m sure folks are aware, this really is a great show, I’m tense already.
- Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (CBS) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – I haven’t read anything about this new spin off but assuming it’ll be a comparable psycho of the week but outside of the USA
- Daredevil (Net) Season Premiere, Friday, 3am – Let the Marvel universe continue its reign, I grew to enjoy this toward the end of the season and curious to see where they go from there.

So I’ve stopped noting season premieres for the most part but with streaming curious how they all work. For normal TV I just have a season pass set, so if it’s a show I watch I get it when it comes back but streaming… Netflix seems to send me an email (which is probably a preferences thing) and I know if I tune in they will most likely, but not always, show it in the big banner. Since I’m not a pay user of Amazon or Hulu, or any other random service, I wonder how well they prompt you? Who can keep up with it all?
- Damien (A&E) Series Premiere, Monday, 10pm – The Omen grows up, not supposed to be good at all.
- Little Big Shots (NBC) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – Steve Harvey shows of cute kids with talents.
- Of Kings and Prophets (ABC) Series Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – One of those period things, ruler of Israel, future leader, meh.
- The Victoria’s Secret Swim Special (CBS) Wednesday, 9pm – Not sure this needs explanation.
- Underground (WGN) Series Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – As in underground railroad, this additional scripted drama on this network should be worth a look.
- Bosch (Am) Season Premiere, Friday, 3am – Since I know peeps have their eye on this one.
- Flaked (Net) Series Premiere, Friday, 3am – Will Arnett comedy always means I’m intrigued.
- The Characters (Net) Series Premiere, Friday 3am – 30 min sketch comedy put on by new peeps each time, not my bag but who knows.
- Party Over Here (Fox) Series Premiere, Saturday, 11pm – More sketch comedy.
new and noteworthy tv: 2/29-3/6
I can’t resist a look at new shows even if I don’t think they’ll get in the lineup, though I am more forgiving of sitcoms than dramas.
- Ink Master (Spike) Season Premiere, Tuesday, 10pm – So excited for a new season of beautiful and terrible tattoos and personalities.
- The Real O’Neals (ABC) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 8:30/9:30pm – Martha Plimpton returns to half hour funnies as matriarch of a less than perfect perfect family.
- Hap & Leonard (Sund) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – This is described as a darkly comic swamp noir story, what?
- The Family (ABC) Series Premiere, Thursday, 9pm – Joan Allen as politician and matriarch on the drama side, missing kid returns after many a year and secrets abound.
- House of Cards (Net) Season Premiere, Friday, 3am – I’m almost done with less than noteworthy season three in preparation.
- Mythbusters (Disc) Series Finale, Saturday, 8/9pm – A lot of myths have been busted and the time has come, followed by a special with the busters discussing.
- Downton Abbey (PBS) Series Finale, Sunday, 9pm – I’ve yet to catch an episode of this but now that it’ll be complete, worth adding to the queue?
breaking up is hard to do
So now that we’ve talked about some of the good tv of the last year, there are a few shows that are on my own personal chopping block. I have to admit I’m often kind of relieved when a show I watch gets canceled. Every year there are new shows, plus the shows I’m already watching, it’s just impossible to keep up. But since the networks don’t always put shows out of their misery, or mine, I sometimes have to leave shows that aren’t quite what they used to be. Here are a few in contention:
- The Blacklist (NBC) – So James Spader has always been what’s worth watching on this show, the problem is that the girl he and everyone else devote so much time to is not only not as good, she’s downright annoying and I can only hold out for so long.
- The Grinder (Fox) – This show has a pretty interesting and amusing arc where Rob Lowe’s character has had enough movement that at first I thought it had surpassed the initial conflict but while I still think the dynamic between the two brothers has potential I am starting to get weary of the beloved idiocy vs. schmucky straight arrow.
- Sleepy Hollow (Fox) – The first season was so campy and action packed it was a blast, but since then the show has struggled to find the right plots keeping the characters that we enjoy together and fighting an evil that we can get behind vanquishing.
- Gotham/SHIELD (Fox/ABC) – These shows have both been off on hiatus for so long that I’m not really remembering where they were at, and though there are things about these both that I enjoy the fact that I wouldn’t notice if they never came back isn’t a good sign.
- Elementary (CBS) – I still dig the main characters on this and their relationship (no will they or won’t they action here) but find that I’m less engaged with the overarching plots and I’m less impressed by the specific crime solving skills, but maybe because that’s because I’m paying less attention, I guess this is turning into a mindless procedural for me which maybe isn’t so bad.
- Madam Secretary (CBS) – This show has always been a poor man’s Good Wife/West Wing but since I like the idea of both those shows it’s kept on the roster, but when I start thinking House of Cards is doing a better job portraying politics something is wrong.
- Mysteries of Laura/Rizzoli & Isles (NBC/TNT) – Ok these shows were never ‘good’, but they typically fill the need that I have for something more mindless, is it bad that I seek out palatable shows that I don’t have to pay attention to, fortunately I think R&I is wrapping its run this season.
- The 100 (CW) – I know I just put this show on my best list, but there are two story lines that are bugging me this season, though I continue to love the hard choices that people are having to make and I have hopes that things will bring enough of the right kinds of drama.
