Ok now we’re cooking with gas (I’ve never used that expression before in my life)…
Monday:
- Deal or No Deal (NBC, Mon 9/17, 8pm) This is the one with Howie Mandell and the chicks with briefcases, I’ve never cared enough to figure out how it really works.
- Prison Break (Fox, Mon 9/17, 8pm) Ok I loved, loved, loved this show the first season and I could write an entire post on how bad it was in season 2. I watched the first 17 minutes, or whatever they showed online, and am not, I repeat, not going to watch another season.
- K-Ville (Fox, Mon 9/17, 9pm) Pilot – I guess it’s just wait and see about whether this is more than an average cop show set in a less than average recovering from Katrina New Orleans setting.
Tuesday:
- Beauty and the Geek (CW, Tues 9/18, 8pm) I have watched an episode or two of this show and was mildly amused by the fish out of water challenges that make people look dumb.
Wednesday:
- America’s Next Top Model aka ANTM (CW, Wed 9/19, 8pm) There is a true addictive quality to this and although I can’t for the life of me remember who wins from year to year I dig the journey. The first episode isn’t the best because there are just too many girls to get a real sense of who’s who, so stay tuned.
- Back to You (Fox, Wed 9/19, 8pm) Pilot – This has decent buzz, and I like a decent sitcom, but it is opposite ANTM and Pushing Daisies so it might just get a week or two to woo me.
- Kid Nation (CBS, Wed 9/19, 8pm) Pilot – So if kids ran their own town would it break child labor laws? That seems to be the question put to courts. Is the show interesting enough to merit the pain CBS is going through? Time will tell.
- ‘Til Death (CBS, Wed 9/19, 8:30pm) This show about two couples, one newlyweds and the other not, with Brad Garrett, wasn’t quite funny to me, paired with Back to You it could get a fresh wind.
- Gossip Girl (CW, Wed 9/19, 9pm) Pilot – I have mentioned that I’m looking forward to this show so hopefully it’ll have enough trash as we meet our previous queen bee, who spent a mysterious year at boarding school, when she returns to of course find her old best friend has taken her place.
- Kitchen Nightmares (Fox, Wed 9/19, 9pm) Pilot – It looks like mean guy who had reality show where he tormented wannabe chefs might now just torture full restaurants, not interested.
- Plus they are doing a recap show for Grey’s Anatomy that focuses on Addison before she moves on to Private Practice (ABC, Wed 9/19, 9pm)
Thursday:
- Survivor: China (CBS, Thurs 9/20, 8pm) I watched this show for the first few seasons and am actually kind of a fan. They have a really good formula of alliance building and challenge winning to keep the outcome up in the air, and since the decision is really up to the other contestants there’s no weird judge or America votes thing.
procrastinator’s picks are underlined.

the absolute injustice of it all! all of the good new shows are on wednesday night, and we have our stupid cultural outing that night! damn our attempts to better ourselves!!!!
i suppose i’m going to need to figure out how to use the stupid VCR now and wipe the dust off of those old tapes…..
the triple booking is a true problem during the launch of things, and then things switch schedules and/or get cancelled and/or are lame and not an issue… in the meantime, some shows are replaying at least pilots to try to get you hooked (though of course you can’t always count on scheduling for random reshows so check your listings):
– K-Ville (9/18, 9pm listed on a secondary channel so check local listings)
– B and Geek (CW, 9/20 8pm)
– ANTM (CW, 9/23, 9pm – scheduled to rerun all season)
– GGirl (CW, 9/23, 8pm)
and i won’t even address your vcr issues but i will share a link: http://www.tivo.com/
hey there procrastinator… 1) thank you for letting me know about the Sunday re-runs. all i can say is THANK GOD!, 2) i heard some such nonsense about this t.i.v.o thing.. i just don’t know…aren’t we supposed to suffer and face horrible, solomon-like choices on tv? is that not what makes us human?, 3) i’ve also stumbled across another new show that i would like to bring to your attention called, “Women’s Murder Club” on ABC. There has been a large hole in my life since “Murder She Wrote” was taken off the air – i hope to fill it with this show. Four spunky female pals, a cop, a reporter, a lawyer and someone else team up after hours to solve crimes, et al. Now I’m just hoping that it won’t come on the same time as “Mystery” and those “Matlock” re-runs…shoot.
ahh kimtastic you make me laugh or make me very afraid.. wait ’til 10/12 to see angie harmon play one of the WMC’s four characters: detective, medical examiner, district attorney and reporter… based on some james patterson novels (and exec produced by jp) this show attempts to mix the procedural crime drama and the personal gal pal drama.. haven’t heard much but this may be alright for a friday night… though you may be more engaged with the new Moonlight (vampire detective – also starring VMar’s Jason Dohring) or the critically acclaimed (but not a personal favorite of the procrastinator) Friday Night Lights… stay tuned
So the only show of “next week” (which is now “this week”) that I’ve been able to catch is “Beauty and the Geek.” For some reason i just really love this show, although it’s really appalling how these girls have presumably graduated from high school, and, in some cases, even attended a junior college class or two. the first challenge for the girls was to set a benchmark for their intellectual state (can we say “limbo lower”) – a professorial-looking guy asked them to name “in alphabetical order, all of the countries you can think of starting with ‘A’ ” — the first girl chews her lip and after much thought says “Alabama,” > “Boston,”… it was too much! i had to scream. The first challenge for the geeks was that they had to make out with a mannequin – i kid you not. they were instructed to kiss the mannequin (who seemed to be about 6” tall, making the guys reach up) in the same manner that they would their girlfriend. For some of the guys, this seemed quite normal (maybe they’ve had practice?), but for most it was really…really…REALLY painful. At least we know that these guys will probably graduate MIT, invent facebook or something, make a ton of $$$ and go on to marry a supermodel. the final catch of the show was that they introduced one couple which was a beauty BOY and a geek GIRL. for some reason, i don’t think that’s going to go over well. i think that the girl will be having none of the stupid shenanigans of the boy idiot (case in point, the failures of the bachelorette shows), but then again, maybe i give my sex too much credit. yay! new teevee.
I too am a fan of the transformative power of Beauty and the Geek. Where else can Hooters waitresses and aspiring Playboy models learn that geeks are real people too? My favorite audition question and answer:
Q: What animal is the symbol of the democratic party?
Beauty: A bird?
Q: What kind of bird?
Beauty: Big Bird?
Priceless!
well my thoughts on the new shows
– K-Ville – i was underwhelmed by the overly melodramatic show, anthony anderson’s cop on the edge spouts a little too ostentatiously about doing the right thing for new orleans while chasing down criminals plus heroes starts in this time slot next week and this show doesn’t feel worth setting the vcr over – for me it’s a pass
– Back to You – so far i think kelsey and patricia are good and there were a few chuckles, but it was mostly kind of stereotypical and a little laugh tracky – will give it another shot
– Kid Nation – i was actually quite prepared to stand up for how the show wasn’t exploiting the kids but i thought it was a little harsh, and when they introduced a team and class competitive nature to the show i realized i would have felt more comfortable if the kids were just trying to make it, but i’m not sure i would watch it either way – for me it’s a pass
– Gossip Girl – well there’s more than one secret to be uncovered i’m sure, but although all the ingredients of good cheesy fun were there it’s not yet either witty or less than stereotypical enough to be a real winner – will give it another shot
