new and noteworthy tv: 3/5-3/11

I’ve still got a little backlog but thinking about what to dive into next?

  • Hard Sun (Hulu) Series Premiere, Wednesday – Two incompatible police partners investigating a death learn about the end of the world, some mixed reviews.
  • Life Sentence (CW) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 9pm – Lucy Hale leads a cast where she learns that she no longer has cancer and has to face the ignored fallout from her life.
  • The Oath (Crackle) Series Premiere, Thursday – Once you pledge to one of these gangs you’re in, and I still don’t know what Crackle is.
  • Jessica Jones (Net) Season Premiere, Thursday – I’ll definitely tune in as this was my fave of these Marvels though rumor has it this doesn’t quite strike the magic of the first.
  • Champions (NBC) Series Premiere, Thursday, 9:30pm – Taking over the family gym and perhaps a new kid, with a guest spot from EP Mindy Kaling.
  • AICO Incarnation (Net) Series Premiere, Friday – Another new anime offering.
  • Love (Net) Season Premiere, Friday – This off kilter series about a romance between a couple of misfits is awkward but I’m in for the final season to see where these two leave off.
  • Sneaky Pete (Am) Season Premiere, Friday – The first season of this was a lot of fun as Giovanni Ribisi plays a con man recently out of jail who pretends to be his cell mate and has lots of drama from his own life and the one he’s trying out.
  • American Idol (ABC) Sunday, 8pm, Season Premiere – It’s baaack, Ryan Seacrest still heads it up with new judges Like Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie.
  • Deception (ABC) Series Premiere, Sunday, 10pm – Yet another variation of the standard premise of person with odd expertise helps law enforcement, this time we’re going with magician to mixed reviews.
  • The Royals (E!) Season Premiere, Sunday, 10pm – I mostly enjoy this over the top look at a faux royal family, though I wasn’t in love with last season’s plot line I’m game to see where this goes.
  • Timeless (NBC) Season Premiere, Sunday, 10pm – Rescued from cancellation, I didn’t stick with this one but for those of you who did it’s back.

  • Incorporated (Syfy) Series Premiere, Wednesday, 10pm – Dennis Haysbert is one of the known commodities in this Affleck/Damon look at fictional life in sinister corporate future, pedigree makes it worth a look.

  • Top Chef (Brav) Season Premiere, Thursday, 10pm – Eight new and eight returning chefs compete.

returning fall favorites

izombieIt’s that time of year again. And while the new shows trickle in here’s a look at some of the returning fall shows I’m excited about.

  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 9/21) – This show has done a pretty good job of keeping things going and evolving with the genius misfits and their pals.
  • The Blacklist (NBC, 10/1) – It’s still only worth it for James Spader but we’ll see whether Liz on the run works.
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox, 9/27) – They’ve gotten a good rhythm with Samberg’s foolishness and fleshing out the other characters, makes me laugh.
  • Elementary (CBS, 11/5) – My current fave standard procedural, I enjoy the reinvention of the modern day crime fighting duo and think some of the less successful asides are wrapped.
  • Empire (Fox, 9/23) – The funnest reentry into last season’s schedule the campy family and music drama is irresistible.
  • Fargo (Fx, 10/12) – Last season’s odd crime ensemble captured the spirit of the flick but brought out a new slant, and this season attempts to do the same in a new tale.
  • Fresh Off the Boat (ABC, 9/22) – This immigrant family embracing suburbia in the ’90s has enough anticipated humor and enough unanticipated that it was refreshing.
  • The Good Wife (CBS, 10/4) – They haven’t all been home runs but they’ve managed to reinvent this show in a compelling way after so many seasons, excited to see the latest not so good Alicia.
  • iZombie (CW, 10/6) – This show is less zombie more of a Veronica Mars-esque girl getting in over her head detective show and she happens to eat brains which give her a little dead person insight.
  • The League/You’re the Worst (Fxx, 9/9) – Worst was a fave from last season which grew into more than just a coupe of snarky people, but the ensemble remains snarky with another season of people who actually are the worst in fantasy football and in life.
  • Longmire (Net, 9/10) – Glad this show got picked up on Netflix and happy to spend another season with the laconic lawman and the latest troubles.
  • The Royals (E!, 11/15) – Season one of a look behind the scenes of a fake royal family was fantastically trashy and fun, can’t wait to see what comes of them next season.
  • The Walking Dead/Z Nation (AMC, 10/11; Syfy, 9/11) – I enjoy a little post apocalypse world and these two shows give a totally different tone of voice.

A few other items that I’ll check back in on and see whether I want to keep them in the queue: Bones (Fox, 10/1), Gotham (Fox, 9/21), Grimm (NBC, 10/30), The Last Man on Earth (Fox, 9/27), Madam Secretary (CBS, 10/4), The Middle (ABC, 9/23), The Mindy Project (Hulu), Mom (CBS, 11/5), SHIELD (ABC, 9/29), Sleepy Hollow (Fox. 10/1), Undateable (NBC, 10/9)
