  • House/Lone Star (Fox, 8/9pm, LS repeats Sat at 11pm) Season/Series Premiere – I’ve been sticking with House for years but the battle of the time slot my take it as a casualty, hearing good things about Lone Star’s grifting ways.

Thursday

  • My Generation/Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice (ABC, 8/9/10pm) Series/Season Premieres – Generation is getting some of the worst buzz, so due to scheduling won’t make a pass, but will check back for Grey’s before tuning out of ABC again.

intriguing new fall tv

With fall’s new crop of tv hitting it’s time to take a look at what might be worth a look. Based on what I’ve seen, heard, and read I’m intrigued by:

  • Blue Bloods (CBS, 9/24) – Tom Selleck is always worth a look, this time as head of a cop family with the ensemble filled out by Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan among others.
  • Boardwalk Empire (HBO, 9/19) – As noted this Scorsese take on prohibition lead by Steve Buscemi is getting the best buzz around.
  • The Event (NBC, 9/20) – Critics don’t have all that glowing reviews of the pilot, but enough possibility to consider for filling my now vacant roster of weird/conspiracy shows, which it looks like we see from a few different folks points of view.
  • Hawaii 5-0 (CBS, 9/20) – Not your father’s 5-0, this renegade cop unit lead by public darling (who I just don’t get) Alex O’Loughlin and backed up by ensemble Scott Caan, Grace Park, and Daniel Dae Kim, looks more slick than substance which isn’t always a bad thing.
  • Law & Order: LA (NBC, 9/29) – Ripped from the headlines, LA-style, you get the idea, it’s another one of these and based on experience the cast/chemistry can make or break it.
  • Lone Star (Fox, 9/20) – This pilot has been reviewed glowingly, with a charismatic grifter leading two lives, although some question the series’s sustainability, I’ve learned to give the benefit of the doubt on that.
  • No Ordinary Family (ABC, 9/28) – Heroes done family style as Michael Chiklis and his family, including (I hope she’s not as annoying as Dexter’s Rita) Julie Benz, get super powers and at least start out trying to live normal lives.
  • Raising Hope (Fox, 9/21) – Cloris Leachman is the new Betty White, and this show about they won’t call them white trash folks raising a kid is getting talk of nice marriage of quirky and funny from the maker of My Name is Earl.
  • Running Wilde (Fox, 9/21) – High hopes for the latest from Arrested Development’s creator starring  Gob (Will Arnett) and Felicity (Keri Russell) are dampened by rumor that they’ve been reworking the pilot, which might not be there yet, but worth some time to see.
  • Terriers (Fx, 9/8) – I liked the washed up, won’t grow up, trying to do right pair of PIs with their good chemistry and look at a balance between cases and what looks like it will have some big picture story.
  • Undercovers (NBC, 9/22) – JJ Abrams (Lost, Alias, Star Trek) makes what looks like a lighter, less conspiratorial, hot couple of leads instead of one, Alias-esque show, I’ll always give JJ a shot.

And the rest of the bunch that might not have piqued my interest quite as much, but I won’t lie to you, I’ll check out too:

  • Better With You (ABC, 9/22) – The JoAnna Garcia couples ensemble romcom isn’t supposed to be groundbreaking.
  • Body of Proof (ABC, 9/24) – Dana Delany might or might not save this latest coroner procedural.
  • Chase (NBC, 9/20) – Rumor has it this US Marshalls procedural has some chasing but not a lot of substance.
  • The Defenders (CBS, 9/22) – Jerry O’Connell and Jim Belushi as Vegas lawyers might be too schmaltzy to work.
  • Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC, 9/21) – Could be a decent cop drama lead by Michael Imperioli, being reworked to remove docu-drama angle.
  • Hellcats (CW, 9/8) – Hard to watch Bring it On-esque series that doesn’t bring it.
  • Mike & Molly (CBS, 9/20) – Endearing leads said to be stuck with trite fat jokes to start this romcom.
  • My Generation (ABC, 9/23) – No glowing words have been heard about this fictional/docu-style look at folks from high school and ten years later.
  • Nikita (CW, 9/9) – I didn’t love the first episode, it all felt a little flat for me but might check back.
  • Outlaw (NBC, 9/15) – I hear Jimmy Smits does not always a good show make, as Supreme Court Justice turned fight for the little guy lawyer.
  • Outsourced (NBC, 9/23) – Apparently the amusing film is boiled down to racist jokes.
  • S#*! My Dad Says (CBS, 9/23) – Watch William Shatner say not funny inappropriate things in a Shatner way.
  • The Whole Truth (ABC, 9/22) – Courtroom drama with Maura Tierney and Rob Morrow that might not be all that dramatic.

Shows listed in alphabetical order and all premiere dates are of course subject to change.

new and noteworthy tv: 9/13-9/19

Another week until the full onslaught of fall kicks in, get your dvrs ready… procrastinator picks are underlined.

Monday

  • Oprah Winfrey/Nate Berkus Show (Syndicated) – I don’t really follow daytime but thought it worth noting that Oprah kicks off her last season while her latest protege, who is adorable, gets his own show.
  • 90210/Gossip Girl (CW, 8/9pm) Season Premieres – I watched GG for a few seasons with pleasure but just lost interest as the college years started, which would make me think this might be the last good season of 90210 if I had ever liked it.

Tuesday

  • One Tree Hill/Life Unexpected (CW, 8/9pm) Season Premieres – Another couple shows that I gave a little time to but just couldn’t stick with.
  • Parenthood (NBC, 10pm) Season Premiere – This show grew on me over the season with the family drama and the always likable Lauren Graham and Peter Krause (and we all know they’re dating in real life right?).
  • Fashion’s Night Out (CBS, 10pm) – Neil Patrick Harris hosting almost makes me want to tune in.
  • 1000 Ways to Die (Spike, 10pm) Season Premiere – Um, ick.
  • Sextuplets Take NY (TLC, 10pm) Series Premiere – The obsession with procreation continues.

Wednesday

  • Survivor (CBS, 8pm) Season Premiere – Another season, another destination, Nicaragua.
  • Ma’s Roadhouse (Tru, 9/9:30pm) Series Premiere – A Dallas man and his ma manage a bar, bike shop, and tattoo parlor.
  • Outlaw (NBC, 10pm, repeats Friday) Series Premiere – Jimmy Smits stepping down as Supreme Court Justice to help the little guy hasn’t gotten great buzz for a relatively procedural courtroom drama.
  • The Ultimate Fighter (Spike, 10pm) Season Premiere – Fight!
  • Top Chef Just Desserts (Brav, 11pm) Series Premiere – If you’re a Top Chef fan you can imagine what this’ll be like.

Thursday

  • The Apprentice (NBC, 10pm) Season Premiere – Taking a break from celebrities, this season features the unemployed.
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia/The League (Fx, 10/10:30pm) Season Premieres – So wrong it’s right, and then taking fantasy leagues to the next level.

Friday

  • Ghost Adventures (Trav, 9pm) Season Premiere – Travel at its spookiest.
  • Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO, 10pm) Season Premiere – Bill keeps it real.

Saturday

  • Dvr catch up?

Sunday

  • Boardwalk Empire (HBO, 8pm, repeats various) Series Premiere – Maybe the most critically buzzed about new show, Martin Scorsese directs Steve Buscemi as an Atlantic City power guy during 1920s Prohibition.
  • Real & Chance/Fantasia for Real/La La’s Full Court Wedding (VH1, 9/10/10:30pm) Series/Season Premieres – More shows, more reality.

Since scheduling come fall gets difficult and networks sometimes rerun pilots I’ll try to note repeat airings for new shows, all times are typically PST.

returning fall favorites

Though I learned from Alan Sepinwall that fall doesn’t officially start until September 20, I think anything after Labor Day is fair game.  The tv season is in fact starting and what, you might wonder, have I missed most? Well since you asked:

  • Bones (Fox, 9/23) – Still a favorite among the procedurals, Booth, Bones, and the rest of the lap techs are fun characters with cases that bring out the best balance of science and humanity in everyone.
  • Chuck (NBC, 9/20) – They’ve done a really good job of having Chuck evolve as a spy without losing the total humor of the situation and the great supporting characters keep bringing the geek and the spy skills.
  • Cougar Town (ABC, 9/22)/Community (NBC, 9/23) – These two comedies both started out pretty dumb, but both situations of misfits bonded together by proximity (and characters forcing the bond), really grew into their characters and their funny to make them two of the highlights of my week.
  • Dexter (Show, 9/26) – No season has been as good as the first, and I still think I hate all the women, but I still long to find out what happens to Dexter and how he gets into and out of trouble and murder (or justice) each week.
  • Glee (Fox, 9/21) – This show is uneven for sure but there is enough heart and originality and of course fun musical numbers to make this show must see tv for me.
  • The Good Wife (CBS, 9/28) – Maybe the best show introduced last year, the tragic politician’s wife story brings a subtlety and drama to each of the characters and situations that make me as interested in the ongoing character stories as the weekly procedural.
  • Sons of Anarchy (FX, 9/7) – Tonight! Probably my most anticipated and favorite show to watch, the motorcycle gang and their families are violent and scheming and unmerciful as they protect their business and each other.

Honorable mentions (other fall stuff on season pass): ANTM (CW, 9/8),  The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 9/23), Castle (ABC, 9/20), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 9/23), House (Fox, 9/20), How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 9/20), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX, 9/16), Law & Order: SVU (NBC, 9/22), The Mentalist (CBS, 9/23), The Middle (ABC, 9/22), Modern Family (ABC, 9/22), The Office (NBC, 9/23), Parenthood (NBC, 9/14), 30 Rock (NBC, 9/23).

new and noteworthy tv: 9/6-9/12

Summer’s not officially over but I’m starting to sense fall. Procrastinator picks are underlined.

Monday

  • CBS Fall Preview (CBS, 8:30) – Hawaii 5-0 and whatnot.
  • Hoarders (A&E, 9/10pm) Season Premiere – There is some serious possums running through the house, no place to move, calling child services hoarding in the previews.
  • Thintervention with Jackie Warner (Brav, 10:15pm) Series Premiere – Jackie Warner tries to get some folks thin.

Tuesday

  • 360 Sessions (IFC, 6pm) Series Premiere – David Gray guests on what I assume is a well rounded look at him.
  • Rehab (Tru, 10pm) Season Premiere – I think this show is actually a look at partying not rehab.
  • Sons of Anarchy (Fx, 10pm) Season Premiere – Can’t wait to see all the trouble they get into and out of, Jax and the gang’s struggles to do the right thing pull me in as much as the action.

Wednesday

  • ANTM (CW, 8pm) Season Premiere – I just can’t stay away from this show, though I don’t seem to care about the girls and Tyra is unbearable, wait why do I watch this?
  • Hellcats (CW, 9pm, repeats Fri) Series Premiere – This looks like a cheesy Bring it On but I can’t resist checking out the cheese.
  • Inside the NFL (Show, 9pm) Season Premiere – I wanna say they look at the NFL.
  • Terriers (Fx, 10pm, repeats various) Series Premiere – One of the new shows that I’m genuinely interested in seeing, critics are saying good things and I dig Donal Logue, seeing him in an edgy, comic buddy, PI type show seems like a good fit.
  • Black Gold (Tru, 10pm) Season Premiere – The gang gets new management in this reality fare.
  • The Day Before (Sund, 10pm) Season Premiere – The season starts with a look at Diane von Furstenberg.

Thursday

  • The Vampire Diaries (CW, 8pm) Season Premiere – I sampled this series last season but couldn’t get into the latest vampire brooding stares and small town goings on.
  • Sunday Night Football (NBC, 8:30pm) Season Premiere – Also on Sunday.
  • Nikita (CW, 9pm, repeats Fri) Series Premiere – Not sure what to make of this latest take on Le Femme Nikita based on the previews but it’s getting enough good buzz, as is Maggie Q as our rogue assassin back for revenge.
  • Destination Truth/Beast Legends (Syfy, 9/10pm) Season/Series Premiere – Paranormal and then beasty investigations.
  • Watch What Happens (Brav, 10pm) Season Premiere – An interview show that kicks off with some of the ‘real’ housewives.

Friday

  • Stand Up to Cancer (Various, 8pm) – Celebrities and performers on this fundraiser.
  • Four Weddings (TLC, 10pm) Season Premiere – Brides judge each other’s weddings to win a dream honeymoon.
  • Fashion Police (E!, 10:30pm) Series Premiere – Joan Rivers dishes.
  • Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-Up (Starz, 11pm) Season Premiere – Martin brings in the comics.

Saturday

  • Cops/America’s Most Wanted (Fox, 8/9pm) Season Premieres – Can you believe these shows have been on for 23 and 24 seasons respectively?
  • Dogs 101 (AnPl, 8pm) Season Premiere – More doggie info.

Sunday

  • US Open (CBS/ESPN2, various) – The Grand Slam concludes with the women’s final on Saturday and men’s Sunday.
  • MTV VMAs (MTV, 9pm) – Chelsea Handler hosts, let the Kanye West jokes end.
  • Over the Limit (Tru, 10pm) Season Premiere – It’s like Cops I think.
  • The World of Jenks (MTV, 11pm) Series Premiere – Andrew Jenks is a filmmaker who follows strangers to show insight into their worlds.

Since scheduling come fall gets difficult and networks sometimes rerun pilots I’ll try to note repeat airings for new shows, all times are typically PST.

i miss tivo

I’d been wanting to upgrade from my classic TiVo to something that could record more than one channel at a time but sometimes I wonder whether progress was made. I had initially purchased TiVo with the lifetime service so the box I had was basically free. I did some research and finally decided that since I had to have the cable guy come out anyhow, I’d try out the dvr that comes from the cable company with a no risk monthly fee instead of throwing down for another TiVo which would entail the price of the box plus a monthly or lifetime service cost. I do enjoy being able to record more than one channel but it’s a wonder to find how much better the interface and service were on the TiVo.

  • General Viewing – The very first thing I noticed when moving to the new dvr is the janky functionality on the ffwd and rwd. The TiVo was in tune with the timing of the speed of each so that once you hit play it would start playing where you wanted it to (playing with a slight adjustment to the location, with in effect a little bit of a jump, but so smooth you barely noticed). The new dvr actually started skipping in the wrong direction, I was missing entire scenes. They seem to be working on this because now it starts to play and then jumps back part of the way, sometimes, I think, it’s still annoying and I’m still missing scenes when I ffwd/rwd. And sometimes of course it won’t stop when I hit play, even though the play symbol is shown it keeps in ffwd until I pause or hit rwd and then play. Another occasional issue is the audio, sometimes when I turn on the dvr the audio is muted, this is typically fixed by turning it off then on again, unfortunately I can’t do this while it’s recording so I guess no watching tv with audio until my recordings stop. Fun right?
  • Search – I will say that Comcast just did an update on this and you can now search by keyword! Previously you could only search by exact title and the most you could put in 5 characters, I missed this feature a lot from TiVo. TiVo’s is obviously still much better but being able to search for ‘tennis’ for example and get women’s and men’s and Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, well I’d say genius if this function weren’t so basic. Their menu for search is a mess but at least you can figure it out, and you can delete previously saved searches which for some reason you couldn’t do before. The other thing that bugs me is that if you search for a show and select it in the menu, and the show happens to be current it will take you to that channel instead of going to info (or at least maybe asking if you want to go) which is particularly annoying if you don’t even get that channel (see Guide below).
  • Record – As noted the big reason to upgrade (or downgrade) was the ability to record more than one show at a time but a few of the features are still a little wonky. If two shows are already set for a time and you try to record a third it won’t display both shows that are in conflict, it will only show the single show that it deems a conflict (it seems to stick to the rec1 or rec2 system). It will also change the channel if you are watching something and it’s time to record which makes sense if you’re recording two things but no sense if you’re only recording one (you can then go back and change the live channel). I have also had tons of recording errors where the show either only gets partially recorded (but typically displays as a full hour of recording) or records for hours and hours (and typically displays as a partial recording so it does try to record again, this can bloat the storage quickly and delete oldest shows). The season pass also tends to record a show again and again if you have watched and deleted the show, TiVo remembered what I had recorded already even if I deleted it (plus on TiVo it was nice that you had the option to store your deleted files for some time). And with TiVo the manual recordings had more features, for example I could do a recurring recording by time for something like the NewsHour which I only save one of, rather than it recording the show at multiple times.
  • Guide – Well the guide isn’t bad, but the TiVo has other view options, I was into the version where you could see several channels of the current showing and then when you were on a specific channel it would show future times in more detail. I do miss the ability to view prior to the current hour, I wouldn’t have thought much about this but apparently I do sometimes want to scroll back in time to see what was on or if I missed something. And there’s the fact that one would think that if I was getting my dvr through my cable company that there would be the ability to only display the channels that I get, instead of showing every possible channel (1-999), I mean TiVo had the option to select ‘basic’ service for ‘Comcast’ by location and then you could of course customize what channels you wanted to display, which I assume is not just that I can’t find on this version.
  • On Demand – As a benefit to the switcharoo I did get access to OnDemand service which is actually pretty nice. For the channels that I get there are many shows that are available for some time whenever I want, which particularly comes in handy if there’s a time slot that I’m overbooked on, I don’t know about a show, or some snafoo happens with my recording (which clearly happens more often than I would like). What would be great though is the knowledge as to what will be available. If a show is already going you can usually discern whether it’s listed or not, how soon after airing it shows up, how many episodes they keep at a time and how frequently they expire. But I’d rather not have to discern and of course if a show is just starting out there’s no way to know for sure whether it will be included so one tends to not want to count on it. And it would be nice if I could record two shows and watch OnDemand simultaneously but that might just be greedy. And you can pay for new release movies and stuff which so far I haven’t sampled, it’s certainly not a Netflix replacement for me for example.
  • Remote Control – This is a little petty but I don’t know how many times I’ve hit ‘All On’ to turn on or off and the delay to turn off the tv is so long that if you move the remote control it won’t turn off. I miss the peanut TiVo remote.

The other main issue is the general box. I had to go through three different units before they got everything to work. Each time losing recorded shows, season pass programming, and having to repopulate the guide (which takes forever). Though annoying it was mostly forgivable, what’re less so are the ongoing issues. For me it’s the infrequent losing of the guide and the occasional losing of my manual recordings when that happens (season passes seem to repopulate). What’s beyond unforgivable is that someone else I know had all of their recorded shows and recording options deleted after a system ‘upgrade.’

It might just be inertia but I’m trying to be patient hoping the next big thing will come out and/or prices will come down before I clear off yet another box and make my way to the next one. I am also admittedly kind of a cheapskate when it comes to television I hate the idea of more monthly fees and buying a box that will become outdated with what seems like greater and greater frequency. Though loss of critical shows through another dvr recording meltdown might push the issue.
