With fall’s new crop of tv hitting it’s time to take a look at what might be worth a look. Based on what I’ve seen, heard, and read I’m intrigued by:
- Blue Bloods (CBS, 9/24) – Tom Selleck is always worth a look, this time as head of a cop family with the ensemble filled out by Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan among others.
- Boardwalk Empire (HBO, 9/19) – As noted this Scorsese take on prohibition lead by Steve Buscemi is getting the best buzz around.
- The Event (NBC, 9/20) – Critics don’t have all that glowing reviews of the pilot, but enough possibility to consider for filling my now vacant roster of weird/conspiracy shows, which it looks like we see from a few different folks points of view.
- Hawaii 5-0 (CBS, 9/20) – Not your father’s 5-0, this renegade cop unit lead by public darling (who I just don’t get) Alex O’Loughlin and backed up by ensemble Scott Caan, Grace Park, and Daniel Dae Kim, looks more slick than substance which isn’t always a bad thing.
- Law & Order: LA (NBC, 9/29) – Ripped from the headlines, LA-style, you get the idea, it’s another one of these and based on experience the cast/chemistry can make or break it.
- Lone Star (Fox, 9/20) – This pilot has been reviewed glowingly, with a charismatic grifter leading two lives, although some question the series’s sustainability, I’ve learned to give the benefit of the doubt on that.
- No Ordinary Family (ABC, 9/28) – Heroes done family style as Michael Chiklis and his family, including (I hope she’s not as annoying as Dexter’s Rita) Julie Benz, get super powers and at least start out trying to live normal lives.
- Raising Hope (Fox, 9/21) – Cloris Leachman is the new Betty White, and this show about they won’t call them white trash folks raising a kid is getting talk of nice marriage of quirky and funny from the maker of My Name is Earl.
- Running Wilde (Fox, 9/21) – High hopes for the latest from Arrested Development’s creator starring Gob (Will Arnett) and Felicity (Keri Russell) are dampened by rumor that they’ve been reworking the pilot, which might not be there yet, but worth some time to see.
- Terriers (Fx, 9/8) – I liked the washed up, won’t grow up, trying to do right pair of PIs with their good chemistry and look at a balance between cases and what looks like it will have some big picture story.
- Undercovers (NBC, 9/22) – JJ Abrams (Lost, Alias, Star Trek) makes what looks like a lighter, less conspiratorial, hot couple of leads instead of one, Alias-esque show, I’ll always give JJ a shot.
And the rest of the bunch that might not have piqued my interest quite as much, but I won’t lie to you, I’ll check out too:
- Better With You (ABC, 9/22) – The JoAnna Garcia couples ensemble romcom isn’t supposed to be groundbreaking.
- Body of Proof (ABC, 9/24) – Dana Delany might or might not save this latest coroner procedural.
- Chase (NBC, 9/20) – Rumor has it this US Marshalls procedural has some chasing but not a lot of substance.
- The Defenders (CBS, 9/22) – Jerry O’Connell and Jim Belushi as Vegas lawyers might be too schmaltzy to work.
- Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC, 9/21) – Could be a decent cop drama lead by Michael Imperioli, being reworked to remove docu-drama angle.
- Hellcats (CW, 9/8) – Hard to watch Bring it On-esque series that doesn’t bring it.
- Mike & Molly (CBS, 9/20) – Endearing leads said to be stuck with trite fat jokes to start this romcom.
- My Generation (ABC, 9/23) – No glowing words have been heard about this fictional/docu-style look at folks from high school and ten years later.
- Nikita (CW, 9/9) – I didn’t love the first episode, it all felt a little flat for me but might check back.
- Outlaw (NBC, 9/15) – I hear Jimmy Smits does not always a good show make, as Supreme Court Justice turned fight for the little guy lawyer.
- Outsourced (NBC, 9/23) – Apparently the amusing film is boiled down to racist jokes.
- S#*! My Dad Says (CBS, 9/23) – Watch William Shatner say not funny inappropriate things in a Shatner way.
- The Whole Truth (ABC, 9/22) – Courtroom drama with Maura Tierney and Rob Morrow that might not be all that dramatic.
