Well all the buzz made us plan not to expect another Lost launch, so imagine my surprise when it started with a plane nearly crashing, though this one was just full of some freaky diseased people. And of course at least one of our leads needs to have lost a love, or lose a love, or maybe just be betrayed by one in a tragic way that makes them that much more focused on the cause, and a little damaged, so we covered that.
Our FBI gal invested herself in the investigation of the crazy translucent skin caper and pulled out all the stops dragging in our other leads and stumbling on to a bit more than she ever could have imagined. And of course a nice conspiracy and/or questionable corporation can be an overarching theme and give us plenty of fodder for our week to week adventures.
I’ll have to say it just had a slow start with the dry FBI angle, even though the case was unusual, unusual cases don’t surprise all that much anymore. The introduction of Pacey could have been a spirit bringer but his character at least started off as sort of a downer. I have to admit that I think I was rooting for Pacey but so far he’s no Fox Mulder. His cocky calling the little lady ‘sweetheart’ and his ridiculing his father’s sciences all seemed a little stilted. I guess that’s the main problem that I had with the series, I didn’t love the main characters, and with what’s basically a procedural that’s what we tune in for.
About half way through Pacey was committed to the endeavor, about the time they got his dad uncommitted from the looney bin. The dad is a nutjob who was given carte blanche to explore weird (fringe) science back in the day until he got locked up for some lab incident. And of course he couldn’t be let out without the guardianship of his genius screw up son. Now we’re all signing up to get to the bottom of some more irregular incidents. So does this show have potential? Absolutely. But the nutjob, the FBI gal, and the contentious genius son all need a little more work. I’ll trust JJ for now.

i totally agree, p-chroninator. I DID enjoy the show despite having just 60 and 90 second breaks to race back and forth to the kitchen to get snacks (hello 20th century and tivo – how are you?)…. i finally succumbed to the newfangled marketing trick and just watched the darned commercials. apparently hollywood was the only one who could afford the air time. anyhoo….my fave shot was the gang on the couch with the cow in the background (btw…who was the african-american chick? she just appeared and started doing stuff, but never said anything – what’s up with that?). i have to say that i’m going to find it hard to view the bovine as a test suspect when they’re making it out as an endearing character. i like pacey because he’s cute, and he knows how to wear a knit scarf jauntily – not because he’s all that compelling, yet. but all in all i will hang in there, if, for nothing else, than it’s pretty much the only new game in town. i’ll trust p-crhon, who’s trusting jj for now….

Fringe is still in only because the mantra is to “trust JJ for now” And True Blood may survive – again “for now” only because I like Anna paquin, a fetching but most unlikely, other-worldly Southern belle.
