next week 9/23
You might want to gear up with a power bar and a water (ok, or a beer and some chips) because we’re going to be here for a little while. This is the week, there are more than four times the premieres of last week. Ready? Let’s get to it.
Sunday
- 60 Minutes (CBS, Sun 9/23, 7pm) – News show that I haven’t watched in years for no particular reason.
- CW Now (CW, Sun 9/23, 7pm) Pilot – Entertainment focus ‘cuz we need another one of those.
- Online Nation (CW, Sun 9/23, 7:30pm) Pilot – Web and blog focus ‘cuz we just don’t spend enough time online.
- The Simpsons (Fox, Sun 9/23, 8pm) – I watch this now iconic animated show sporadically, mostly in reruns to be honest, but still find it amusing.
- King of this Hill (Fox, Sun 9/23, 8:30pm) – Ditto Above.
- Cold Case (CBS, Sun 9/23, 9pm) – I watched this procedural for a while but was just sort of not into it enough to keep it in the queue.
- Family Guy (Fox, Sun 9/23, 9pm) – I never got that into this animated series.
- Shark (CBS, Sun 9/23, 10pm) – I watch this sporadically, with James Woods as pretty annoying lawyer who switched from defending the guilty to putting them away. This year it looks like Jerry Ryan will switch from boss to employee with a new boss to mix things up.
- They are also doing Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters recap shows at 9/10pm on ABC.
Monday
- Dancing with the Stars (ABC, Mon 9/24, 8pm) – I was completely surprised when this show took off (though I don’t get crocs either), I don’t really watch but apparently the ‘stars’ are engaging to watch learn and compete with professional partners.
- * How I Met Your Mother (CBS, Mon 9/24, 8pm) – As noted this ensemble makes me laugh. Last season Lily and Marshall got married and Ted and Robin broke up, and Barney, well Barney probably just hopes the next season is legendary (ok you need to picture Barney saying that).
- * Chuck (NBC, Mon 9/24, 8pm) Pilot -.Chuck, an aspiring office manager, somehow gets all of america’s secrets downoaded and thus gets involved with the whole secret agent thing.
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS, Mon 9/24, 8:30pm) Pilot – We’ll see if the geeky guy/super hot gal show goes beyond the stereotypical.
- * Two and a Half Men (CBS, Mon 9/24, 9pm) – So Allan is still broke and leeching off Charlie who seems to be slowly dealing with his perpetual womanizing ways, and the kid is still around for the crass/stupid comedic effect.
- * Heroes (NBC, Mon 9/24, 9pm) – Last season they discovered their powers, and the conspiracy, as they fled their foe Sylar (who was killing to steal everyone’s powers). Was anyone actually killed in that final episode? Where and when did Hiro teleport to? Woo hoo, Happy to see what’s up for our gang of heroes this season as they all seem to be coming together!
- The Bachelor (ABC, Mon 9/24, 9:30pm) – I still am not into this one guy picks from a bevy of beauties show, but I now know that after getting sucked into Rock of Love I am not above it.
- Rules of Engagement (CBS, Mon 9/24, 9:30pm) – I do think David Spade and Patrick Wharburton are funny but this show of guys in various stages of relationship just wasn’t all that.
- CSI: Miami (CBS, Mon 9/24, 10pm) – This is my least favorite of the CSI’s because David Caruso grates on my nerves, but once you buy into the csi guys do just about everything it’s a decent procedural.
- Journeyman (NBC, Mon 9/24, 10pm) Pilot - Time travel can be hard on a marriage, especially when you seem to be looking into the death of an old fiancé, we’ll see.
Tuesday
- NCIS (CBS, Tues 9/25, 8pm) – I don’t think I’ve ever watched an episode of this Mark Harmon JAG spin-off.
- * Bones (Fox, Tues 9/25, 8pm) – As noted I dig these guys, will this be the season that Bones and Angel get together? Fortunately there is enough else going on to keep us entertained.
- The Unit (CBS, Tues 9/25, 9pm) – I’ve watched a few of these rogue army unit goes on a mission while the wives deal with the drama at home, they’re not bad, but I didn’t stick with it.
- * Reaper (CW, Tues 9/25, 9pm) Pilot – Slacker becomes a bounty hunter for satan, well he had no choice, apparently his parents sold his soul, hopes to be a ‘thrillomedy’.
- * House (Fox, Tues 9/25, 9pm) – Last season House fired his three staff, or did they quit, whatever, either way we’ll look for him to torture new and old this season. Oh and hopefully we’ll be able to check the chemistry on real life recently unengaged girl and australian drs.
- Boston Legal (ABC, Tues 9/25, 9:30pm) – I never quite dug this Practice spin-off where quirky rules and William Shatner and the rest of the cast try to out weird each other while practicing law.
- Cane (CBS, Tues 9/25, 10pm) Pilot - Can the family rum and sugar dynasty survive the internal and external fighting and will the excellent cast be enough to keep us coming back?
- Law & Order: SVU (NBC, Tues 9/25, 10pm) – The better of the L&Os, though I stopped watching this show in the regular season when it came on and the stories all seemed so similar that I couldn’t tell whether I’d seen the episode before, though I still catch in the off season.
Wednesday
- Private Practice (ABC, Wed 9/26, 9pm) Pilot – Good cast and I like the Grey’s, but we’ll see if they can find their own vibe as Addison tries to start over in this laid back multidisciplinary medical office.
- Criminal Minds (CBS, Wed 9/26, 9pm) – A pretty brutal behaviorist FBI unit procedural, I’m interested to see Joe Mantegna replace kind of annoying lead Mandy Patinkin.
- * Bionic Woman (NBC, Wed 9/26, 9pm) Pilot - Looks like we start at the beginning with bartender Jaime getting into a car wreck (I’ll miss Lindsay’s opening parachute scenes) and finding out she’s been ‘saved’.
- * Dirty Sexy Money (ABC, Wed 9/26, 10pm) Pilot – Peter Krause’s dad dies suspiciously, so will he take the attorney reigns of the clan? Of course he will, but at what price?
- CSI:NY (CBS, Wed 9/26, 10pm) – Right, so this is another one of those CSI shows except in this one they have new york accents. I do occasionally catch this in the summer run.
- Life (NBC, Wed 9/26, 10pm) Pilot – Wrongly accused cop gets out of jail and somehow gets a ton of money and goes back to work, I’ve heard he’s likable but the show is weak.
Thursday
- Ugly Betty (ABC, Thurs 9/27, 8pm) – The darling of last season I was never won over by the campy soapy fashion misfit in the couture setting.
- * My Name is Earl (NBC, Thurs 9/27, 8pm) – Earl is making some progress on fixing his karma and ended up in jail for a crime Joy committed. Happy to see where this takes him and the rest of the gang.
- Smallville (CW, Thurs 9/27, 8pm) – I actually was sort of into this show at first, the way they created characters before they became who they were, but quickly tired of the kryptonite mystery of the week and some of the self riotous characters.
- CSI (CBS, Thurs 9/27, 9pm) – The original of the bunch, I was never in love with the tone or the ‘CSI does it all’ premise but as a stand alone procedural it certainly works, I do catch during the summer.
- * Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, Thurs 9/27, 9pm) – Burke/Washington’s gone, Addison’s gone, and everyone’s aleady slept with each other, we’ll undoubtedly get some fresh blood.
- * The Office (NBC, Thurs 9/27, 9pm) – Well did Pam and Jim have their date and how will Michael handle reporting to former temp Ryan all while dealing with newly unemployed and newly racked girlfriend Jan?
- Big Shots (ABC, Thurs 9/27, 10pm) Pilot – With a cast like Dylan McDermott, Joshua Malina, Michael Vartan and Christopher Titus we’ll see if they can overcome the initial bad ’sex and the city’ buzz.
- Without a Trace (ABC, Thurs 9/27, 10pm) – Someone disappears and the FBI finds them, almost all of the time, was that giving away too much? A decent procedural.
- ER (NBC, Thurs 9/27, 10pm) – I watched this for years, but when the episodes started backing up on tape I realized I just wasn’t that engaged in the current cast and stories.
Friday
- Ghost Whisperer (CBS, Fri 9/28, 8pm) – Jennifer Love Hewitt sees dead people… and helps them or something. Never caught on with me.
- Moonlight (CBS, Fri 9/28, 9pm) Pilot – Vampire detective apparently has a buddy at the bloodbank to keep him honest, oh and did I mention that VMar’s Jason Dohring had joined the cast, I miss Logan. Rumor has it the pilot was completely retooled and so no one has seen it.
- Las Vegas (NBC, Fri 9/28, 9pm) – I almost liked this sort of glitzy campy casino show but the right tone of cheesy is hard to sustain.
- * Numbers (CBS, Fri 9/28, 10pm) – Again, I do like this procedural of math and FBI and family…
* Procrastinator’s picks - though of course I haven’t seen the pilots yet so we’re all working on faithAnd of course you can always refer back to Procrastinator’s favorite returning shows, most anticipated new fall tv, and what generally hits the Tivo

Well, yay! finally, as you said last week, now we’re cooking with gas.
In looking through the shows, i am ashamed to note that my choices are heavily skewed by the boys associated with them: 1) i have a big crush on seth macfarlane and love stewie, so will probably be watching the family guy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJSmANHxY0Q&mode=related&search=,
2) i of COURSE will be watching the bachelor - a train wreck i hope - please god the guy is not a total dolt this year, and 3) yay for logan’s return! i miss my favorite teen drama, and maybe by piecing together moonlight and the VO on Gossip Girl, it’ll assuage the pain…

For those of you who might have some scheduling problems you can catch a few of these other shows at additional times this week (remember to check your local listings since these reruns aren’t always all that reliable):

- Chuck (9/29 9pm and 9/30 11pm on scifi)
- Heroes (9/29 8pm)
- Journeyman (9/27 7pm on scifi and 10/1 12am on scifi)
- L&O SVU (9/29 10pm)

i haven’t seen most of the shows on the list, but i DO like Chuck and Reaper. They seem oddly similar - in the same vein as “Knocked Up” and “Superbad.” I guess the kind but unmotivated slacker hero is much in vogue these days. I commented on chuck earlier, but I love the fact that his mean quasi-spy bully/ally is now one of his co-workers - i guess the fact that he’s from the NSA has a sort of “post 9/11″ quality about it - also love that he’s in a showdown with his former stockroom partner for the asst. manager job; as far as reaper goes - also love that his friends just take it into stride that he know is battling demons, and have even gone so far as to join the battle. the ever-present pack of dogs (ie, hounds from hell) are there are a nice touch- especially like that they’re still scared of the vacuum cleaner! will def be watching these two again.

(9/26) so what do we think of new shows so far
- CW Now - was a blur of uninformative and uninteresting entertainment news - not good, pass
- Online Nation - felt a bit like america’s funniest home movies on the web - for me not good, pass
- * Chuck - i thought the description of office meets alias was apt, totally fun action but a little campier with our non-spy nerd as protagonist - liked it!
- Journeyman - i wasn’t in love with the bouncing around in time intrigue but liked the characters enough to give it another shot - stay tuned
- * Reaper - again i thought the buffy-esque description was pretty good, it struck a good tone between camp and actually handling a more serious side to our guy’s new role and like the supporters - liked it!
(9/27)
- Cane - eh, i really wasn’t expecting to love this and i didn’t, there’s a tough balance to strike with seriously dramatic and soapy despicable characters and i just didn’t think they did it, might watch one more time but probably not - pass
- Bionic Woman - i thought they did a good job with the update and the setup, jaime’s in a tough position but to be honest she hasn’t won my heart, though i’m definitely interested to see the tone and content of the next couple of shows - stay tuned
- Life - eh, i kind of liked the mix of characters and the standalone and overarching stories but it just wasn’t quite all there, will probably give it another shot - stay tuned
(10/1)
- The Big Bang Theory - eh, there were one or two amusing moments but for the most part it didn’t grab me, may watch again after HIMYM but may switch to Aliens in America - stay tuned
- Private Practice - eh, not in love with the messed up cast of characters in the alternative medical team, tough competition with GGirl and BionicW so who will win the time slot - stay tuned
- * Dirty Sexy Money - Over the top fun and they’ve got one of every kind of bad behaving rich types, I found the first episode a delight - liked it!
- Big Shots - great cast but come on, what kind of show were they even trying to do, drama, campy soap, amusing slice of life?, Dirty Sexy Money wins this time slot - pass
- Moonlight - this was just a very bad wannabe Angel show, if even our beloved Logan can’t make a 400 year old sassy vampire sidekick intersesting i don’t know that there’s any hope, and that blonde girl totally reminded me of a wooden Elizabeth Rohm (Angel and L&O), ugh - pass
